Principal's Message
We are looking forward to the rescheduled International Picnic and Potluck on Saturday, October 29th at 11:00am. What a great way to celebrate our diverse Elmonica community.
The Picnic and the Jog-A-Thon are great examples of our volunteer community coming together. Thank you for all that you do for our kids and our school community.

PYP
This Month in PYP (Primary Years Programme) . . .
Elmonica is currently a candidate school of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. Our staff has been working for the past three years, learning about the program and beginning a trial implementation. The exciting news is that we have just turned in our application to be considered for authorization this spring! We will have visitors for three days, meeting with all staff and observing what we are doing. If all goes well, next year we will be an “official” authorized IB school!
If you are interested in finding out more about the PYP, come join us at our PTO meetings! Kathy Leahy will be attending the meetings each month, starting October 12th at 6:00pm. She will share a bit about what PYP means at each meeting so our community can become well informed about this wonderful program!

PBIS Pajama Day
The students earned the spirit day by filling the school Ride-On box with positive behavior tickets.
Our positive behavior expectations are:
* Be safe: Be free from harm of any kind (physical or emotional)
* Be respectful: Be polite, cooperative and celebrate diversity.
* Be responsible: Be dependable and trustworthy at all times.
When your child comes home with a Ride On! Ticket, you can reinforce his/her positive behavior by asking your child what behavior earned him/her a Ride On! Ticket.
Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support, or PBIS is the behavior system for our entire school. It applies to all students and staff.
PBIS is based on a research and instructional model that teaches, reinforces, models and re-teaches expected behaviors for children. The system is designed to:
* Define our expectations in each area of the school
* Teach our expectations from lesson plans to every student
* Reinforce and encourage our expectations using Ride On! Tickets and school wide acknowledgement.
Having defined and taught our expected behaviors, we must encourage and reinforce those behaviors through positive reinforcement. Authentic and meaningful positive reinforcement and encouragement will reduce discipline problems and create a school culture and climate that will help our children perform at higher levels of social, emotional and academic achievement.
Learning Options Information for 2017-18
Applications will be available starting Monday, October 24, 2016. All applicants must reside within the Beaverton School District boundaries. Current Beaverton School District students are able to apply online using their student ID. Resident students not currently attending a Beaverton school will need to complete a paper application available online, or at any school office beginning October 24, 2016. Below is a link to this year’s open house schedules.

We recognize the impact this change will have on families and childcare may be a challenge.
We are exploring opportunities for additional after school activities with the Beaverton Education Foundation and other community partners.
The District recognizes this fact and has already begun the planning process. Some of those steps include weekly planning meetings, conducting parent focus groups and regular communications about the change. Much of the work is focused on determining how to support families and students in the transition.
We would love to discuss what this will look like, the benefits we anticipate for our students, and how Elmonica and the Beaverton School District can support our families in throughout the transition. We will address the schedule change at Principal Chats and PTO meetings throughout the school year.
In addition, the District has developed an Early Release/Teacher Collaboration webpage. There is a link to this page on our school webpage in the “School Resources” box. The webpage includes an FAQ that may contain answers to many of your questions.
Planning for Early Release/Teacher Collaboration will continue to take place throughout the 2016-2017 school year. Please check the District’s BSD Briefs newsletter, our school newsletter and the Early Release/Teacher Collaboration webpage for updates.
