Falcon Flyer Summer Edition!

August 2022

Dear MES Students, Parents, and Family Members,

August is among us and we are thrilled to be getting ready for a fantastic year at MES. I can not wait to get to meet each and every student and learn all about your families. I am passionate about leading our school and can not wait to see all how high our falcons can soar!

This year our theme will be "Growing MES Leaders and Achievers!" We will be focusing on 10 character traits that make us each successful including being committed, flexible, resilient, responsible, motivated, trustworthy, innovative, as well as being a problem solver, a risk taker, and having a growth mindset! Each month we will focus on one trait and practice applying it to our lives so that our learners can grow and find joy in leadership!

Each month I will send out a newsletter highlighting important items happening at MES and showcasing our students. You can also keep up to date with our school by liking our Facebook and Instagram accounts! We will be posting lots of information on those sites. As always, our events will be posted to our online school calendar available on our webpage and the D2 webpage so check there for events!

I look forward to an amazing school year and getting to know you all personally. If there is anything I can do for you, your child, or your family, don't hesitate to call me at the school or send me an email at brittany.green@spart2.org.

What's Happening at MES?

Playtime with the Principals

Last Thursday afternoon brought about a ton of fun seeing our students and families! We painted rocks for our new rock garden (to be put in soon!), ate lots of popsicles (it was hot enough we all had several!), played yard games like ladder golf and frisbee jam can, and enjoyed the swings and playset! Our PTO came and set up a table with treats for the kids and talked to parents about getting involved in our school. It was such a fun time and our staff left feeling energized and excited about all the possibilities this school year brings! Thank you to everyone who was able to come out and play!

Cleaning/Updating

Check out the newly painted cabinets all around the school! We had lots of staff members come up and show off their creative and artistic skills. Some even brought family members to help. Mr. Hewitt graciously agreed to help sand down and paint some bookshelves and the cabinets in the office for us! Thank you to everyone for helping our school shine!!!

Ms. Lisa and Mr. Jeff have been kicking it in to high gear as the school year draws closer! They are finishing the waxing in the cafeteria, helping tidy up the remaining classroom areas, and ensuring our outside looks fantastic. A HUGE THANK YOU to them for all of their hard work!

Staggered Start

Reminder:

Five Year Old Kindergarten programs throughout the district will begin school on a staggered start basis during the week of August 15-19, 2022. Children will attend “their first and second days” according to the first letter of their last name. Students with A - L last names will attend school on Monday, August 15, 2022 and Wednesday, August 17, 2022, while students with M - Z last names will attend school on Tuesday, August 16, 2022 and Thursday, August 18, 2022. All kindergarten students will attend together on Friday, August 19, 2022.

Student Independence Day

Parents may walk students to the door of their classrooms on August 15 and 16. If you wish to walk your student in, please park in the parking lot and cross at our cross walk so everyone is safe!

On August 17 we will have "Independence Day" as students show off their skills in walking to their classrooms independently!

All staff will be assisting students the first week so that everyone gets to their correct location. Thank you for your support as we help all of our MES Falcons to fly!

(4K parents may walk their students in on the Monday/Tuesday the following week when they begin!)

Free and Reduced Lunch

For the last 2 years we have been lucky to have a grant that provided free breakfast and lunch to all students. However, that grant has ended and we are now asking ALL of our families (not just those that think they will qualify) to fill out an application for free or reduced lunch. Having the current data helps us with Title I funding and additional grant opportunities that benefit all of our students at MES! Please help us by filling out the documents on https://www.spart2.org/departments/food_services/free_and_reduced_lunch.

Supply List

Click here to see our 22-23 School Supply List! 4K students do not have requested supplies because it is a fully funded program.

Transportation Changes

When completing InfoSnap parents indicated how their child would get to and from school. After August 10th, there is a 48 hour delay in providing bus transportation services. If you have questions regarding bus transportation, contact the school office at 864-461-2622.

The bus information number line is 864-342-2046 to learn about any bus delays. If you need to request bus transportation or have a change in your pick up/drop off address, you can complete a form here.

If parents have to make changes to their child’s transportation on August 11th at the Meet the Teachers those changes will not take place until August 17th.

Once school begins, all changes must be in writing--either by handwritten note or email. For the safety of students, we do not accept changes over the phone.

Boys and Girls Club

We are excited to welcome our new Boys and Girls Club director, Shoshana McKinney, to MES! Our program is open to students in 1st-5th grade. BGC starts at 2:15pm and ends at 6:00pm. Students in the club are expected to attend a minimum of 3 days per week. Students will receive academic assistance, homework time, and participate in plenty of fun activities including yoga, gardening, lego club, photography, and more! Space is limited, so be sure to sign up quickly!

Suzuki Strings registration for the 2022-23 school year is now available! The registration link is on our schools website and on the Suzuki Strings page found under clubs/programs or you can click this link: https://www.spart2.org/suzukistrings. The Suzuki Strings page will hopefully answer any questions your families may have. It also allows you to watch videos of last year’s Christmas & Spring recordings. Registration will end August 19th and classes will begin week of August 29th.

iReady

What is i-Ready?

i-Ready is an online program that will help us determine your child’s strengths and areas for growth, personalize their learning, and monitor their progress throughout the school year. i-Ready allows us to meet your child where they are and provides us with data to inform instruction.

The i-Ready Diagnostic is a test that we give to students in the fall, winter, and spring. The purpose of this test is to determine how to best support their learning. All students in 5K-5th grade will take the fall iReady diagnostics on August 23 (Reading) and August 25 (Math). These will be taken in their classrooms on their iPads.

What can I do to help?

To help prepare your child for the i-Ready Diagnostic, encourage them to:

-Get a good night’s sleep and eat a full breakfast the day of the assessment.

-Try their best on each question and try not to rush.

-Try not to worry about questions which they do not know the answers

-Use paper and pencil to show your work for math questions.

What happens next?

It is important that your child do their best because The i-Ready Diagnostic will provide results that help your child's teacher to identify your child’s strengths and determine next steps for instruction.

Teachers will also administer a reading benchmark assessment within the first few weeks of school to determine your child's reading level. Once their reading level is established, the teacher will use that data to determine which reading strategies your child will benefit most from in order to move them forward.

Fall Yearbook Pictures

Fall yearbook pictures will be on Tuesday, September 6! Be looking for information to come home with your child!
