Europeans went to Africa and gathered Africans for slaves they then brought them back to America on ships.

Life for the slaves

Life was harsh for the slaves. A lot of farmers had cotton fields so slaves were picking cotton dad after day. The women in the house had work to keeping it clean for the master and his family.

Harriet Tubman

The Underground Railroad was a secret path for slaves to escape slavery. One of themost famous slaves to use this secret path was Harriet Tubman. Harriet Tubman was a former slave who escaped slavery and became a cook, nurse, and spy. She lead more than 300 slaves to freedom. The reward for her capture was $40,000.


Sometimes slaves would sing songs while they were working. Often these song had hidden messages and clues on how to escape slavery. But usually the lyrics would talk about freedom and hope to lift their spirits.
