Genetic Variation
Lani Sutton
What is it?
Genetic Variation is the changing of genes within a population. Genes determine distinct traits that are passed on from your parents. It occurs mainly through DNA mutation or sexual reproduction. Genetic variation is good for populations, because it makes it easier to adapt to a changing environment.
Examples:
Ears
Have you ever noticed that not everyone has the same shaped ears? Believe it or not your ear shape is actually determined by the genes you recieve from your parents.
Eyes
Eye color is one of the most common forms of genetic variation. Both the color and shape are determined by the genes you recieve from your parents.
Hair
Hair is also a very common type of genetic variation. Texture, color, hair line, and hair thickness are several factors determined by genetic variation.
