This one-day course will provide clinicians at the entry to intermediate level of practice with a strong foundation of essential information as well as practical strategies and tools to help address feeding and swallowing issues in the birth to five population. Course will provide an overview of the nature of feeding and swallowing in young children, body systems involved in the feeding-swallowing process, and assessment process. Course will utilize normal development as a guide to assessment and treatment planning. Course will include therapeutic strategies and practical suggestions, tools, and equipment for direct intervention. Through lecture, case studies and video examples, course participants will enhance their foundation of knowledge to develop stronger clinical skills in pediatric feeding and swallowing.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the end of this course, learners will be able to:
- Describe prevalence of pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders
- List a variety of contributing medical conditions
- Identify critical A&P and body systems involved in feeding and swallowing process
- Describe sensorimotor skills in normal development of feeding and swallowing
- Outline basic nutritional guidelines
- Describe dental development in children
- Describe assessment process and treatment planning
- Describe tools and strategies to assist in development of appropriate pre-feeding and feeding skills
PRESENTER
Dana has more than 17 years of clinical experience as a pediatric SLP and feeding-swallowing specialist. She sees infants who struggle to develop appropriate oral sensorimotor skills for breast and bottle feeding. She works with older babies who struggle with transition from one food stage to next food stage. Dana also sees toddlers and older children who are very restrictive eaters. She has been trained in sensory integrative strategies, Sequential-Oral-Sensory (SOS) Feeding Solutions, and Food Chaining.
