Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progessiva

Cause

Mutations in the ACVR1 gene.


ACVR1 gene provides instructions for producing a member of a protein family called bone morphogenetic protein.

How do we get F.O.P?

It can be inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern or it could occur randomly while in the womb.


Symptoms

Malformed big toes and painful tumor like swellings on the head, neck, and/or back.


Treatment

You can be given systemic steroids but there is no proven solution to treat F.O.P
