# Integer Operations

## By: Fernando Cardenas and María José Villarreal 6B

Here you will learn how to add integers.

+= positive

- =negative

• 4+(-5)=

First you have to follow this rules:

• + += +
• - -= +
• + - = -
• - += -
The + and - makes a - so you change the operation to this:

• 4-5=
You subtract 5-4 and get the answer 1

Since the biggest number is negative then the answer will be negative -1

• -9 + 4= -5
• -3 + 3= 0

## Subtraction

Here you will learn how to subtract integers.

+ = positive

- = negative

• -3 - 7=

• + + = +
• - - = +
• + - = -
• - + = -
The - of -3 and the - of the subtraction makes a + so you change the operation to this:

• 3+7=
Get the answer (which is 10) and then look at the bigger number and give the answer its sign. Answer: -10 because the 7 has the negative sign in front.

• 5 - (-3)= 8
• 8 - 10= -2

## Multiplication

Here you will learn how to multiply integers.

Rules:

• Same signs: positive product
• Different signs: negative product

• -5 · 3=
First you multiply normally

Next you look for the signs

Last you follow the rules for the product sign

• -5 · 3= 15
• 1 - and 1 += -

• 6 · -2= -12
• -4 · (-5)= 20

## Division

Here you will learn how to divide integers.

• Same signs: positive quotient
• Different signs: negative quotient

• 12/(-3)=

First divide normally

Then look the signs

Last give the correct sign for the quotient

• 12/(-3)= 4
• 1 + and 1 -
• 12/(-3)= -4

• -14/7= -2
• -30/(-15)= 2
