Suicide Prevention
South Central Mental Health sent us a general handout about suicide entitled "Attempted Suicide Awareness Prevention." It contains resources, myths, facts, and warning signs. Suicide Prevention Pamphlet
Also, the Lifesavers Manual provided by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention has some great pieces of advice:
If someone you know is thinking about taking his or her life, take it seriously. Suicidal thoughts can be life-threatening. Let him know his life matters to you. Stay with him. Help her create a safe environment by offering to remove lethal means. Help her find treatment. Avoid- debating the value of life, advice to fix it, minimize their problems.
If you think someone is thinking about suicide, assume you are the only one who will reach out.
1) Talk to her in private. 2) Listen to his story. 3) Tell her you care. 4) Ask directly if he is thinking about suicide. 5) Encourage her to seek treatment or to contact the doctor or therapist. Plus, we encourage high school students to seek out an adult to help a person who is having suicidal thoughts or behaviors.

Sophomore/Junior Visit Days
College admissions representatives visit ACHS during seminar times to talk to students in small groups about their schools. We highly encourage our sophomores and juniors to take advantage of this time to learn about schools and meet the admissions reps. Our sign up is in the Counselor's Corner under College and Career Visits. Students will receive passes to be excused from seminar to attend the sessions.
Also, we encourage juniors to start visiting colleges in the spring. Colleges will generally have Junior Days or personal tours. As an example of a college visit page, here is a link to University of Kansas' Visiting Campus. Campus visits can be made online, email, or with a phone call. Please let your child make the appointment- it is a great time to practice!
