Mrs. Wilson's Classroom
October 12-16
6th Grade This Week
Tuesday we focused on adding dialogue to our stories. We looked at how to add the correct punctuation when characters are talking.
Wednesday we focused on paragraphing correctly and we had a partner look at out writing to make sure that we were all on the right track.
Thursday we looked at a mentor text titled, "Everything Will Be Okay" by James Howe. We talked about what parts of the story spoke to us and then looked at how the author crafted his story to pull emotion out of their reader. We then talked about how we can use those same techniques in our writing.
Friday we worked on goal setting. Now that students have seen how far they have come as narrative writers, I wanted them to look at how far they can go and make a goal on becoming a better writer. Ask your child what goal they have set for themselves.
7th Grade This Week
Tuesday we looked at our rough drafts of our fictional narrative. We talked about having information in our stories that was not needed and adding information where our reader needed more detail. We looked at a 6th grade check list and a 7th grade check list. This helped the students see where they fell on a grading spectrum.
Wednesday we looked at the ending to some popular stories and short stories. We talked about what made them good endings. The students then worked on putting those techniques to work in their writing.
Thursday I think the students enjoyed critiquing the ending to my rough draft. We discussed what I could do better and what could be alternatives to the ending of my story. We also talked about how they should be leaving clues for their reader about the ending of the story.
Friday students were given time to craft the ending of their writing piece. I feel like we talked a lot about it the past few days but they didn't get much time to construct it. While the students were working, I took the time to get caught up on conferencing with all of the students who I had not met with. For those students who felt like they were "finished" with their rough drafts and had nothing else to add at this time, I assigned next weeks annotated text for them to work on.
