Teach Transferable Skills
Cultivate a Love of Reading
Events Supported or Organized by the MTE Media Center
- Based on the book Proud as a Peacock, Brave as a Lion, by Jane Barclay.
- Attended by families and friends of the MTE Community.
- Program included a speaker, students reading the book, the choir, a slide show, and a bugler.
Visit by Author/Illustrator/Rapper Jef Czekaj - November
- Students enjoyed lively presentations for K-1, 2-3, and 4-5.
- He met over lunch with students interested in art.
Scholastic Book Fair - January
- Proceeds made it possible to invite another author to MTE next year.
Family Literacy Night - February
- Coordinators: Becky Campbell, Shirley Morton, Hella Rumschlag
- State Superintendent Glenda Ritz was a guest reader.
- Students in grades K-3 rotated through 4 stations.
- MTE Staff performed a Reader's Theater of Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse, by Kevin Henkes.
Invention and Science Night - April
- Eighty 4th and 5th graders shared their inventions, video games, and science experiments.
- Participation was required of students in the challenge program; it was optional for others.
- Projects were not judged, but all participants received certificates and ribbons.
Fifth Grade Graduation Video - May
- The Media Specialist compiled video clips recorded by students, of their classmates, along with photos, to show during the graduation ceremony.
Summer Library Hours - June - August
- The MTE Media Center is open for checkout for 4 hours one day each week during June, July, and August.
- The MakerSpace is also open to students and families during these times.

Programs
- Second and third grade classes were invited to the library to listen to a read-aloud while eating lunch on picnic blankets.
- Lunch Bunch was on Mondays for grade 2 and on Thursdays for grade 3.
Pumpkin Book Characters
- During the month of October, students were invited to decorate pumpkins as favorite book characters and display them in the library.
YHBA Battle of the Books
- Fifty-five 4th and 5th graders competed on teams to answer questions about Young Hoosier Book Award Nominees.
- Students competed during specials or during lunch.
Summer and Winter Reading Challenges
- Students who completed activities in a grid of options received a star on the "Reading Wall of Fame" in the Media Center.
Before and After School Clubs
- Co-Sponsors: Hella Rumschlag and Scott Barajas
- Kathleen Schuetz helped to supervise.
- Sixty 5th graders served on six teams throughout the year.
- Students in other grades led the pledge, gave book talks, shared research projects, and displayed talents.
- Recorded broadcasts were uploaded to this page.
Book Clubs
- Hella Rumschlag was assisted by PTO Volunteers Beth Woods and Aria Cheney.
- Two 4th graders helped at each K-1 club meeting.
- Each club met once a week for 6 weeks.
- K-3 Book Club met in the fall.
- K-1 Book Club met in the spring.
- 2-3 Book Club met in the spring.
Computer Coding Club
- Sponsor: Hella Rumschlag
- Twenty-four 4th and 5th graders met each Friday after school.
- Online resources included Code.org and Scratch.
- Under the direction of Margaret Winans at CHS, the "Carmel Girls Can Code" Club taught our students how to make video games in Scratch.
MTE Green Team
- Co-Sponsors: Hella Rumschlag and Beth Whitaker
- Eighteen 3rd and 4th graders met once a month during lunch and after school.
- Team members shared "green tips" on the broadcast each week.
- During summer of 2016, students and families helped grow a "Salsa Garden" plot in the CCS Community Gardens.
Additional Support
First Grade Research
- A group of 5 first graders, who needed an extra challenge, met in the library for about an hour each day on Thursdays and Fridays to conduct research about topics of personal interest.
- Students worked through the research process, starting with questioning and finishing with a reflection.
- Students presented completed projects on the Student Broadcast.
MakerSpace
- Several classes participated in team-building MakerSpace Challenges such as "Ship-a-Chip" and "Build a Catapult".
Third Grade Math Workshop
- Groups of students from two different classes played math games in the library or computer lab on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays for an hour each day.
Collaboration with the Carmel Clay Public Library
Library Card Signup
- Throughout the year, students were given the opportunity to obtain a CCPL card through the MTE Media Center.
- Goehrig Orr made live appearances on our Student Broadcast once each month.
- Three CCPL Librarians taught all 4th graders how to download ebooks to their personal devices.
- Goehrig Orr read a book to a second grade class for Lunch Bunch.
- Renee' Kilpatrick and Elizabeth Essink ran a station with various types of technology to promote literacy.
4th Grade Research on Indiana History
- Students went on a field trip to the CCPL to learn about digital and print resources for their research projects on Indiana History.
- CCPL Librarians compiled an extensive list of digital resources tailored for this project.
- Goehrig Orr and Elizabeth Essink explained the summer program to students in every grade level.
