A Special Applause to...
PD on the Fly...
I will never forget the first thing I learned in teacher school: All students learn and develop as individuals. This idea has resonated with me throughout my work with kids in schools. I recently found an article to share with you from a teacher who allows students to progress through her class as individuals. Learning paces her class, not time. From experimenting with different systems as a teacher, I know that is a potential management nightmare. Here is the system she created. It's worth some thought and reflection. Enjoy!

RESPONDING TO YOUR FEEDBACK
Thank you to the teachers who provided feedback in our meetings last week. I wanted to take a moment to respond to some items. We will continue to look deeper at your concerns and address them over time, as appropriate.
- Topic: 2nd Chance Breakfast - thank you to those who acknowledged that there is no more 2nd chance breakfast. I know this was an area of concern.
- Topic: Bells - one suggestion we heard multiple times was to establish a clear time for announcements to begin. As you know, we have take this under advisement an reprogrammed the bells to have an 8:15 bell to start announcements.
- Topic: Large Class Sizes - there were several dislike/suggestions on large class sizes. We are working this in a couple of ways. First, we are examining the 5th grade pilot with single subject gifted teachers. I understand that when you create schedules is has become less flexible. Second, we are currently working with HCC to determine if the computer system we use to schedule can balance students into classes the way we need. As suggested, if the computer will not work the way we need it to, we will be shifting scheduling responsibilities to hand schedule students. While I understand this will take a considerable amount of time, it is what's best for our students and our school.
FOCUS GROUP PARTICIPANTS WANTED
Cincinnati Children's Hospital (CCHMC), with the support of Sycamore Schools, has been awarded funding to develop an intervention program related to middle school students with ASD and executive functioning issues. CCHMC is now seeking personnel to support some focus groups; timing hasn't been determined yet, but it would be appropriate for our staff to participate.
One of the major questions they have is how to adapt the intervention for delivery in the school setting. We (Sycamore Schools) proposed to do several focus groups to help us understand how this program could best be integrated into the school setting.
The only commitment is to participate in a 2 hour focus group at CCHMC in late October or November to give us insight into how this could work at schools. Dinner will be provided, mileage will be reimbursed, and participants will receive $100 for participating.
We are looking to schedule focus groups with the following personnel:
1- Principals and vice principals and administrators.
2 - School professionals with experience working with middle school children with high functioning autism (e.g., school psychologists, interventions specialists, special educators, counselors, etc.) that might be called upon to deliver the intervention in the schools.
3 - Teachers who work with high functioning teens with ASD in their classroom setting.
If you are interested in participating, contact Leanne Tamm at Leanne.Tamm@cchmc.org .
