Making Data Meaningful – Part One
The first step in using data to inform instruction is to design assessments that directly connect to curricular standards.
This standards based assessment may take many forms. Correlating each question on a test or quiz with a specific standard is one example. Another is using a standards based rubric with a learning task such as a written response or project. With deliberate planning for delivery & recording results, informal assessments such as response cards or exit tickets also offer an opportunity to gather data on student mastery.
This week try to find time to design, deliver & record data related to specific curricular standards. Next week’s focus will be on crunching the data gathered.
AVID Strategy of the week
With Cornell Notes, students take detailed notes from class lectures and texts in a wide right-hand margin and develop clarifying ideas or questions regarding these notes in a narrow left-hand margin. This helps students develop long-term retention and a deeper understanding of the material studied.
