West Sound Tech Weekly Update
February 8 - 12, 2021
From the Director
Your patience through this whole process is greatly appreciated and just like you, we want our students back in the building learning together in a hands-on environment. Districts are starting the reopening process and WST is following their reopening plans. As districts begin to open for high school students to attend in person, WST will develop individual program cohorts to attend live at WST. Likely, this year, students when in-person learning returns, will still have some Zoom learning, some asynchronous (online) learning, and some time in the building with hands-on learning. Some schools are reopening in the next few weeks, some will be a little later on. Every program will continue to have Zoom sessions for all students and will plan for supported learning for those that will be remote a bit longer. If you have questions, please contact me at shani.watkins@westsoundtech.org.

Mindfulness Practices For Teens
Harper, Gonzalez, and Gonzalez, suggest this practice to sort the mind's activities into three categories; throughs, feelings, and sensations.
Sit tall and relaxed. Take a few full breaths to settle your body and close your eyes. As you feel your breath, notice if your mind is busy with lots of activity... As you notice thoughts arise, begin to label them.
If you have a thought, like "what's for lunch" for example, notice what your mind is saying and then label it "thought." If your mind begins to register a sensation in the body like an itch, warmth, or softness, label it "sensation." If your mind notices an emotion like joy, sadness, boredom, or excitement, label it "feeling."
Practice this activity for 1-3 minutes or sit until you feel like you have a handle on what your mind is experiencing. Then take a deep breath and gently open your eyes.
