Principal's Messages
Dear Hiawatha Community,
I hope you and your family have a wonderful week. I want to let you know that the kids at Hiawatha have been amazing, and we are beyond grateful to have such a caring community. I know this week will be hard for many of us as we let go of "normal holiday plans" and bunker down with our own households. I will be thinking of you all. I hope this more intimate setting provides some time for us to connect with our families, play, relax and feel joy.
Stay healthy and well,
Katherine

Kids on the Ball
Over the last 3 weeks our kids have been learning to play tennis! We were lucky to have Jake Agna come to our school. Not only did he instill a love of tennis in our kiddos, but we were given all the equipment. This is through his amazing program: Kids on the Ball. Read more about this wonderful program on their website: Kids on the Ball. Ask your child what they liked best about it.
Here is a little info:
Kids on the Ball, founded in Burlington, Vermont by Jake Agna is an award-winning tennis and mentoring program. After years of helping thousands of under-served, at-risk youth through Kids on the Ball, Agna is committed to do the same in other cities.
Mission: Changing lives – one ball at a time.
Our goal is to play the next ball, literally and figuratively, while being constantly aware of the opportunity to teach much more than tennis. Daily time on a tennis court with youth provides us many teachable moments. The resulting relationships are the cornerstone of a happy, healthy and well-balanced life. Kids on the Ball is about relationships and respect. We’re teaching life lessons disguised as tennis.

A message from our SEL coach...Mrs. Weston
Greetings Hiawatha Families!
Our students and staff have been working hard on the second SEL standard. After we learned about noticing, understanding and expressing feelings in our first standard, we have been learning to regulate our emotions. When we leave the green zone (which we all do), we can use strategies to change our feelings back to green.
Here’s our schoolwide learning targets:
I can describe what zone I am in.
With help I can talk about what stressor changed my feelings out of the green zone.
When I am out of the green zone, I can ask for help or choose a strategy that works for me to get back to the green zone.
I can talk about when my feelings change.
How can you extend this learning at home?
Ask your children what a stressor is.
Stressor: an event, or something that happens, that moves a person out of the green zone.
Ask your children what a regulation strategy means.
Regulation Strategy: things we can do to help us get back to the green zone.
Share your stressors and strategies. Talk about your feelings. Take care of your stressors. Practice your strategies. If you want to try using a visual to support your children with this, you can find one here.
Did you know we have a new Zones of Regulation poster? Here it is if you’d like to print it out.
Take good care of yourselves. Please be in touch if you wish.
