Message from Mr. Hanzeli
Another important potential transition week is approaching and I want to make sure we all stay attentive to the information given regarding that district decision.
Last Thursday, our school district sent a special message regarding the decision making process for our elementary students. I have included that message below.
I just want to let you know that we are ready for whichever way the decision goes. I am just encouraging you to stay attentive this week as the decision is finalized.
Hang in there and we will continue to keep working through all of this together.

SCSD Thursday Family Message (Repeated Here FYI)
Stanwood-Camano School District
Thursday Family Message
October 15, 2020
Good Evening Families,
You may have seen that the Snohomish County Health District urged Snohomish County superintendents “to pause on any plans to expand in-person learning opportunities [due to] a new rolling two-week case rate that shows the county at 71.8 COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people.” He explained that “this is a sharp increase from previous weeks.” Dr. Spitters emailed guidance to school leaders asking them to “not move ahead now on any plans to bring in additional students.” He also stressed that, at this time, “there is no need to go backward at schools that have already started to bring in students Kindergarten to 3rd grade, or those with special needs.”
According to the health district, at the beginning of next week, Dr. Spitters wants to have further conversations with the state, review the metrics, and has stated that as long as hospitalizations and long-term care facility impacts remain stable, we may be able to proceed as previously planned.
We will be meeting with Dr. Spitters on Tuesday, October 20th, to discuss our plans to bring back 4th and 5th grade students for face-to-face instruction on October 26th. While most grade levels will continue as they currently are, we encourage families of our 4th and 5th grade students to be prepared to remain in continuous learning or for the opportunity to shift to hybrid instruction. We still have not received any guidance on when middle and high school students can return in a hybrid model.
You will receive an update from the district on Tuesday afternoon, October 20th. Please keep in mind this is a very fluid situation. We have been asked by the health district to remind everyone that it is still critical that we limit social gatherings and wear face coverings when around those outside of your household.
Thank you for your continued patience and support.

Title I Reading Supports Reminder to Kinder and G1 Families
REMINDER TO KINDERGARTEN AND G1 FAMILIES
Students not meeting grade level goals for the fall benchmark testing in kindergarten and 1st grade started “in person” small groups last week on the days they were at school. Qualifying students were sent letters regarding this via regular mail about 10 days ago. It was exciting to see all the happy faces ready to practice and learn together!
We are hoping to increase their instructional time by seeing them in Google Meets starting this week on the days they are home. The BB sections will be on Meets this Monday and Tuesday and the AA sections will be on either Wednesday, Thursday or Fridays. A letter with their Google Meet Nickname and Time was sent home last week in a large manilla envelope with your child.
We can’t wait to see them again for these two additional sessions each week to help increase and impact their skills in reading in these small individualized groups (2-4 students). There will be no additional work besides joining their same “in person small group teacher and classmates” for two 20 minute online Meet.
MEET OUR TITLE I / LAP TEAM FOR ELGER BAY
Hello Elger Bay families. My name is Mrs. Patricia (Tricia) Drinnon and I’m excited to have the opportunity to be the Title 1/LAP (Learning Assistance Program) coordinator and reading teacher this year at Elger Bay. I’ve been a 4th grade teacher here for 7 years now and live right here with you on Camano. I love teaching beginning readers and look forward to meeting you and your child this year.
I have an incredible and experienced paraeducator team working with me to support your child’s reading development in a small group atmosphere with 2-4 students. The teachers that you might hear your child talk about are Mrs. B (Kathy Buckingham), Miss Stacy (Stacy Johnson) and Mrs. Webb (Sherri Webb).
Please feel free to email pdrinnon@stanwood.wednet.edu or call 206-629-1457 if you have any questions!

Transportation Plans AND Change of Plans (REPEAT)
Our office works incredibly hard on making sure we understand your daily transportation plans for each student. To that end, it is really important that you make sure you have done all of the following:
- K - G3 students have all had a "blue" daily transportation form sent home by the EBE office to be completed by you regarding the daily plan for your child's transportation to and from school. G4 and G5 will have these sent home when they return to school on 10.26.
- If there is a change from this plan, you must call the office or send a detailed note/Email in advance, so that we might write a "pickup slip" to inform the teacher to make sure that we all know the plan for each child and can communicate about the change.
- Finally, keep the EBE phone number (360.629.1290) loaded in your phone. We know there is the occasional emergency that requires a quicker change at day's end. Please do everything you can to avoid this as it does get a bit hectic, but if there is an emergency, please don't hesitate to call.
I thank you in advance for helping us with this significant safety and communication issue.

Message from Mr. Hanzeli (REPEATED from 10.5.20)
Our next big transition day is upon us. On Monday, October 5, Elger Bay will have students moving into one of two important environments: Many of our K-3 students will begin attending on the AA (M/T) or BB (TH/F) schedule OR several of our students will be working with their distance learning teacher.
Fingers crossed, this will happen for our G4 and G5 students in a few weeks.
As we do this, I want you to know that the safety of every child and every adult is top of mind. In our trainings with the RNs of the district and in preparation of the transition, there really are 5 key ideas that drive our safety protocols. My guess is you know them, but let me share them with you.
1. Masks / shields
2. Social Distancing (6 feet "plus") as much and as often as possible.
3. Hand washing and frequent hand sanitizing
4. Minimizing cross cohort activity
5. Avoiding shared items
What this means for your child is learning many new routines, from how we walk in the hallways, to how we are screened on the bus, to how they get their breakfast/lunch, when they can take off their masks, and more :-) As a small sample of just one item, I wanted to share a brief video that I have made to help reinforce our bathroom (one person at a time) entry, not because it is particularly THE most important procedure, but just to give a picture of how our staff really has to look at everything as new again. EBE Bathroom Procedure
People have done great work and we are feeling ready to go, but we are also hopefully humble enough to stay on alert for refining and changing methods in order to improve them over time.
Thank you for being our partners in this effort.
Sincerely,
Mr. Hanzeli
