The Giver

Book Summary
Jonas is just a normal boy living in his controlled community, but in some ways he's different and he knows it. After growing up seeing differences in the world that no one else could visualize, he is selected as receiver of memory. For a long period of time, Jonas collects memories, good and bad, from The Giver. One night, he learns that his younger sibling, Gabe, will be released the next morning. He decided to take action and runs away from their community along with his baby brother. They must travel through severe weather and must go days with out a single meal to reach another welcoming community, that he hopes is different from the last.
Main Character: Jonas
Jonas is a 12 year-old boy living in a well supervised community. He is a unique boy that can see things that other people cannot such as color. He must go through different challenges since he becomes the Receiver of memories. The memories contain scenes from different places outside of the community and at different times in history. He decides that the rest of the community should not all be the same so he runs away from the community, past the boundary and releases all memories so that sameness does not exist.
Important Characters
Fiona
Fiona is one of Jonas's friends. She has red hair which only Jonas can see. Fiona works as a caretaker in the House of the Old and she is also the subject in a dream which becomes known as Jonas's first stirrings.
Asher
Asher is Jonas's best friend. He is clumsy, imprecise with language, but he is excitable. He is assigned Assistant Director of Recreation.
The Giver
The Giver gives Jonas all of his memories. He transmits memories to Jonas can hold the memories for the rest of the community. Later in the book, The Giver helps Jonas create a plan to escape the community so that all of the memories will be set free.
"The worst part of holding the memories is not pain. It's the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared."

I rate "The Giver" 4 stars out of 5 stars. I didn't like how the book ended but i enjoyed the overall plot.
