Curriculum Corner
Reading:
- This week is Week 6 of Unit 3. We are focusing on using context clues to find meanings of words, as well as main idea and details.
- Since this is considered a review week in our Wonders Reading series, we are reading the novel, Stone Fox, in class this week. Your child will have nightly comprehension homework this week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
- Small-Group Reading...ask your child if they have small group reading homework this week.
Spelling:
- NO SPELLING TEST THIS WEEK!!!!!
Grammar/Writing
- No new grammar skill this week.
In writing, we are exploring informative writing. We will learn how to choose a topic and the steps to follow in writing about this topic.
We will begin another POW this week, Snowman Comes to Life! Students will write a narrative piece on how his/her snowman comes to life, what they do together, and what happens when 24 hours are up and the snowman is no longer alive. Parents, please try letting your child do the revision this time. You are welcome to guide them (especially if the organization is hindering the understanding of the writing), but please let them try to figure out 5 ways to make their story more interesting. The students have been working on this at school and they are doing a fantastic job of revising! Please continue to help them edit and correct spelling, capitals, and punctuation.
- We are continuing our study of multiplication. Watch for flashcards in your child's binder. Please study these with your child for 10-15 minutes every night. Thanks for your support at home!! Mastering multiplication in third grade is a necessity for students to thrive in the upper grades.
- We are focusing on one and two step word problems. We will be looking for key words to help us identify the steps needed to solve a problem.
Social Studies:
- We are studying Citizenship this week. We will be discussing and learning about the rights and duties we have as citizens of the US. We will also take a look at how we can be good citizens. Study guides will come home on Friday, and our test will be next Wednesday, January 22.

Kindness Challenge
This year, students at Ireland Elementary will be completing the Kindness Challenge again. We did this challenge a few years ago, and I am positive we can all complete the challenges this year! This week's challenge is...
Leave a friendly note in a library book for someone to find.
At the end of each week, students who have completed the Kindness Challenge for that week will get to put a sticker up for that act. Kindness is free...sprinkle that stuff everywhere!
