Sexual Assault on College Campuses
A rising problem
The Issue Itself
If this Doesn't Scare You, I Don't Know What Will
According to The Sarah Lawrence College, their research showed that 1 in 4 college women will be sexually assaulted during her academic career.
Schools are Ignoring the Issue
According to an article from the Washington Post written by Nick Anderson, there were more than 39,000 reports of forcible sex offenses on college campuses nationwide in 2012. It has risen fifty percent over three years. The problem isn't being dealt with so those numbers will only rise even higher as the years go on
Girls Aren't the Only Victims
From an article by the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network, 1 in 33 men have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime.
The Actual Assault isnt Where the Struggle Ends
Solutions
Therapy has been a great way to let the victims talk about what has happened to them without the feeling of being judged. They can express themselves instead of just trying to ignore that it happened or trying to hide it. Group counseling is also a really beneficial solution. People can talk with others who have gone through the same thing. Its important to have support and know that you're not alone nor the only person that it has happened to. People can give and receive advice first handedly.
To better the school aspect of this huge problem. I think that school should first
educate their students better by making more effective programs that are mandatory, and second, make a program and counseling center for students who com forward and need the help and support that is needed.
