Sexual Assault on College Campuses

A rising problem

The Issue Itself

Sadly, sexual assault is a huge issue among college campuses. Most people don't even know exactly what falls under that definition. To make it clear, any sexual activity without a verbal yes is considered sexual assault. You should feel comfortable at your school without the feeling that you need to watch your back constantly, even around people you think are friends. Going to get an education should be a safe and successful place to be, not scary and violent. Schools should also do a better job at helping those who have been sexually assaulted. Too many times victims come forward to get help but the schools don't give them it because they are scared of their reputation. This is not right.

The Actual Assault isnt Where the Struggle Ends

Solutions

For some victims coming forward and the effects afterward can be worse for them than the actual event itself. According to the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, victims who have experienced sexual assault are all at risk for the following; PTSD, substance abuse, self-harm, suicide, depression, flashbacks, borderline personality disorder, sleep disorders, and eating disorders. Even though there are no quick fix solutions, luckily there are ways to get help.

Therapy has been a great way to let the victims talk about what has happened to them without the feeling of being judged. They can express themselves instead of just trying to ignore that it happened or trying to hide it. Group counseling is also a really beneficial solution. People can talk with others who have gone through the same thing. Its important to have support and know that you're not alone nor the only person that it has happened to. People can give and receive advice first handedly.

To better the school aspect of this huge problem. I think that school should first

educate their students better by making more effective programs that are mandatory, and second, make a program and counseling center for students who com forward and need the help and support that is needed.
