Accessible Math
March 2020
Let's get VISUAL
We continue to see great evidence for using visual representations, including virtual manipulatives, as an important step in building student understanding. Whether we call it CRA (concrete-representational-abstract) or CVA (concrete-visual-abstract), it's that middle step that we so often skip and it's one that kids really need. Once students have had hands on experiences, they need to either draw or manipulate visuals to make sense of the concepts before moving on to bare numbers and symbols. Mathwarehouse is one exciting tool in providing visuals to students without teachers having to do all the work. Here's a link to their fraction visualizer. It's super cool because you can switch from pizzas to other models with a single click.
This app was identified in response to a teacher request and the website made it even better after we wrote them asking for support. How can we help your math classroom? Share your wishlist so we can be BETTER TOGETHER!
2020 Camper Scholarships
This is an opportunity for students to apply for funding (up to $250) to attend a summer camp in Michigan (exceptions are made for specialized camps not in Michigan). These camperships are open to students who are Michigan residents, with an active Michigan IEP, and would otherwise not have an opportunity for a summer camp experience. Transportation is the responsibility of the family both financially and arrangements.
DEADLINE: Applications must be electronically submitted by March 27, 2020 Click here

Let's read some math!
We've merged the math trade book list from UT Austin and Wayne RESA into one supersized list of vetted books on a wide variety of math topics that have a read aloud version on Youtube featuring diverse speakers whenever possible. If you are in need of a 5-10 minute lesson boost, check out the topic pages that are tabbed along the bottom of the spreadsheet or use control+F to search the spread sheet for the topic you need. The spreadsheet is in our miPLACE Google drive folder, here's a direct link. If you have a favorite, please email me to have it added to the list!
