Carleton Washburne

Monday Memo (On a Tuesday) - September 27, 2022

Washburne Families,

Washburne students and staff gathered together for a morning assembly today.

The presentation included information about seeing something and saying something, being an up-stander and what steps to take if you are in an unsafe situation. While this was a natural opportunity for us to review these things with our students, we made it clear that there are situations in which the safest way to be an up-stander means calling for help–whether that is dialing 911 or getting an adult. We also wanted to recognize that there are going to be instances that if unreported, could escalate into something worse, and want our students to know who they can go to in their school for help.

What’s Happening in Related Studies

In this section we will be shining the spotlight on our Related Studies program and all the wonderful opportunities available to our Washburne students.

The Creative Writing class is made up of 14 passionate writers! So far they’ve written 3 poems, focusing on various forms of figurative language, but above all, they’ve been having FUN playing with words. Their first poem was a Found poem, where they literally “found” the words in magazines. The resulting poems are always surprising and clever! Next, they wrote a Memory Map poem about a memory sparked by drawing diagrams of their bedrooms. For the third poem, we toured the school, dropping in on different environments such as the lunchroom and a KW class to practice writing with sensory details. This week was Whatever Week, where the kids get to write whatever they want, and our fiction unit is on deck!

FIRST LEGO League Robotics Club

FIRST LEGO League Robotics Club takes science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) to the next level. Together, the club will gain real-world problem-solving experience through a guided, global robotics program, helping our students build a better future together. As a club, we will engage in research, problem-solving, coding, and engineering through building and programming our own custom LEGO robot that navigates the missions of the Robot Challenge Map. Friendly competition is at the heart of FLL Club as we prepare for the Regional Qualifying Challenge Tournament.

The club will meet Tuesdays after school from 3:30-4:45, in the CW CoLab (N102) with Mr. Selgrat.
