Dorothy C. York Innovation Academy
Feb. 27- March 3 Newsletter
Mr. Turner, our STEM Coordinator, had the privilege of taking some of our students to the Tampa Convention Center this week to participate in the STEM Fair. We are still anxiously awaiting the results from the judging. We also had 2 students represent York at the Tampa Museaum of Art for the Elementary Fine Arts Festival. We are always proud of our students for representing the Admiral Learner Profile traits of being risk-takers, communicators, knowledgeable, and inquirers out in the Tampa Bay community as they represent STEM and the Arts!
Please watch the STEM fair awards announcement through one of the streaming options below on March 8:
We are so proud of the band, chorus, STEP team, and Living History Museum performers for the skills they showcased in our Black History Month assembly. We were honored to have Dorothy C. York's daughter, Ms. Cohen, join us for the assembly and speak to our students. After an entire month of activities, the assembly was a great way to showcase some of the student work through the banner contest to represent African Americans who contributed to the world as artists, musicians, authors, scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and community/ civil rights leaders. The classes with winning banners were rewarded with popsicles!
If you'd like to see the student performances, some assembly footage is linked here: https://youtu.be/10ba2Z0eQ88
(Please keep in mind this is from a volunteer and is raw footage.)
Our student demonstrated such great spirit on our Bucs "Raise the Flag" days that we won a visit from Captain Fear and a few of the cheerleaders. They dropped off boxes of school supplies to help our students who are in need. We are thankful for their support of York Innovation Academy, and we look forward to rooting for them again next season!
If you were watching Channel 8 News on Thursday evening, you may have seen some familiar faces! Jeff Berardelli came to York to talk with our 5th graders, along with a few of our 4th and middle school science classes about his role as a meteorologist and how he uses his weather tools to observe patterns and trends in his data to help make predictions. We were honored by his presence and gave our Admirals a "shout-out" during his live news segment, saying he was impressed with our students' questions and answers during his sessions.
Pre-K through 5th grade had a BLAST at our Read Across America celebration this week. Mrs. Service, the Media Specialist, along with many parent volunteers, had exciting stations set up for students to celebrate their love of reading with trivia, crafts, snacks, and games. We appreciate the parent volunteers at the event, and could tell from the students' smiles that a good time was had by all!
Please remember there is no school on Monday, March 6th. Please enjoy the Strawberry Festival!
