Searching for Gold

Gold is found in rocks and in the ground.

People come from all over the world, to come to Australia because they want to find the gold.

During the gold rush, in order to search for gold, people had to have a claim and a licence to look for gold.

Some people share gold, their licences and they share their equipment together.

Western Australia

Patrick Hannan, Tom Flanagan and Daniel Shea all found Gold in June 1893. They found gold near Mount Charlotte. All these people were Irish prospectors.

Many prospectors set out from Coolgardie to search for gold in the surrounding desert.

Because of the gold the colony grew richer and a harbour was built at Fremantle, and a rail network linked all the gold towns.

By 1898 Coolgardie was the third largest town in the colony of Western Australia after Perth and Fremantle.

Women on the Gold Fields

Life was hard for the women on the Australian Gold Fields.

Women didn’t do the god digging, it was mostly the men who went to look for the gold.

The women and children joined them later.

The women did do something they cooked and washed.

Even some women sang and danced for the diggers.

Women's work consisted of washing, ironing and cooking. They made bread, butter, jams, soap and clothes for the family.
