Math Beliefs

Hi All

This is a draft of the math beliefs that the Restructuring Team worked on at the November 30 meeting. Please read over. We will have time to refine, agree, disagree and change in January.

In the Spring we will be having a conversation with grade levels at other schools to decide on essential standards for your grade level district-wide. We have not done the level of work around this that other sites have done. This is a constant struggle for me in this area. How much is too much and what is not enough work on standards? What is IMPORTANT is that you as a grade level feel confident that you can speak to essential standards with teachers from other sites. I am open suggestions on how to make this happen?

  • Fluency in addition and subtraction
  • Fluency in counting and writing numbers

  • Problem Solving with real world problems

  • Confidence with problem solving and perseverance

  • Ability to read world problems and know operation to solve the problem

  • Strategies and skills to solve any problem

  • Students to be able to use math concepts learned independently

  • For all kids to be proficient using the CC practice standards

  • Teachers have PD to develop as mathematicians and have the instructional practices necessary

  • Students to be able to apply math problem solving, manipulate numbers and think critically about numbers in real life

  • Students have skills and strategies to problem solve

  • Students think critically about real world applications of math

  • Students conversate collaboratively

  • Students need a strong number sense and place value

  • Build a love of math patterns, processes, problem solving, etc.

  • Students meeting expectations

  • Justice centered
