Challenger Middle School Mission

To provide an exemplary education that develops critical thinking and problem solving skills which inspire our students to challenge their minds and charge their spirits.

Principal's Corner

Hello Charger Families & Happy Spring!

Just like that, we've reached Quarter 4! It's unreal to think of how close we are to the end. We started this year strong, so we're going to finish this year strong. One way we can do this is by making attendance a priority. Please make sure your child is here every day so that they receive the most instruction and have a chance to complete all assignments. This is especially important as we approach the dates for state testing, which is approaching in May. Your child has worked hard all year, so it is time for them to SHINE! Students should get a good night's rest on the nights before the tests and remember to charge their Chromebooks. It will also help if the student has a good breakfast on the day of testing. Together we can ensure that the students do their best!

We have plenty to look forward to non-academic-wise as we near the end of the school year. We just hosted our Spring Fling, our production of Annie the Musical is coming up at the end of April, and we have field trips as well as end-of-year celebrations to look forward to! We are thankful for all staff, students, and family members in helping to ensure these events are a success. Let's finish this school year strong!

Respectfully,

Stacia Winfree

Class Pet of the Month

Mushu the Bearded Dragon!

Mushu the bearded dragon resides in Ms. Sierocinski's Language Arts room. Mushu is a year and a half old. Her favorite food is cilantro with a cricket garnish. She has recently upgraded to the penthouse suite and she is loving all the extra room she now has. Her favorite activity is chilling in her hammock or chilling in her rock, just chilling in general - Ms. S says she is very lazy. Mushu is well-loved by all the students and a staple at Challenger Middle.

April Bus Driver of the Month!

Our April Bus Driver of the Month is Paloma from bus 2356! We are so thankful for Paloma especially because she's always willing to take multiple bus routes to ensure all of our students get home safely.

New Teacher Shout Out, Mrs. Mullins!

Mrs. Mullins may be new to Challenger, but she's not new to teaching - she is currently in her 20th year of teaching! For fun Mrs. Mullins enjoys going to the beach, taking trips to Disney, and spending time with family! She is married and a mother to four children. When asked what her favorite part about teaching is, she said she loves getting to know the students and seeing them get excited about learning. Mrs. Mullins has been a wonderful addition to Challenger, and we are so grateful to have her!

Excellence in Education Awards

Every year the Cape Coral Chamber of Commerce highlights over 60 teachers and students for their outstanding accomplishments in the classroom. Students and educators from the elementary, middle, high school, and college levels are honored the majority from the West Zone of the School District of Lee County, which includes Cape Coral and North Fort Myers.

Each school nominates a teacher and student who they feel go above and beyond in and out of the classroom. This year, our school has chosen Aubrey Duncan as our Student of Excellence, and Ms. Dyan Spero as our Educator of Excellence.

Aubrey Duncan

Aubrey has been a Challenger Charger for three years and has earned a 4.0 A+ overall GPA. Her teachers and all those around her would describe her as talented, charismatic, determined, and generous. She has participated in various activities and exemplifies role-model behavior. When you have a conversation with Aubrey, you know that you are talking with a future leader of America. She is a student who is the epitome of selflessness. She thinks about others, volunteers her time to benefit the community around her, and still manages to perform her absolute best in the classroom. Apart from academics, Aubrey's kindness and compassion extends to charity work as well. She was recognized by the community last year for running a lemonade stand and donating the profits to animal shelters and sanctuaries. Even after earning her 4.0 GPA, and her long list of accomplishments, she still remains humble through her achievements. Aubrey is a true Challenger Charger! Aubrey was nominated by her teachers and chosen as this year’s Student of Excellence.

Ms. Spero

Ms. Spero has been teaching for 2.5 years, all spent at Challenger Middle School! This year Ms. Spero is teaching 6th - 8th grade Global Perspectives, which is our advanced and project-based reading course. Throughout her teaching career, she has been dedicated and passionate about forming relationships with students and creating a positive learning environment. She is up for any challenge and goes above and beyond to help students. On top of being wonderful and dedicated in the classroom, Ms. Spero heads up many activities for Challenger. She runs our Student Council which hosts many after school events, such as dances, as well as run many school-wide donation drives, such as Harry Chapin. She doesn't just stop there either, Ms. Spero also searches for ways to improve communication and cooperation between families and staff. She is very active on our PTO and continues to engage families in our school events/activities. We would like to say a huge congratulations to Ms. Spero for winning this award, your hard work and dedication have paid off.

All-County Jazz Band

We would like to congratulate and celebrate our All-County Jazz Band students, Maxwell Leontes, Aidan Devitt, and Jonathan Dalesandro. They all did a fantastic job representing Challenger and they had a wonderful performance. Both Maxwell and Jonathan earned the privilege of soloing with the band. We are so proud of these students and this wonderful achievement!

6th-Grade 3 Pepper Spirit Night

At the end of February, Challenger hosted a spirit night at 3 Pepper Burrito Co. to raise money for our 6th graders! The spirit night was a HUGE success, and we wanted to thank everyone that came out to support us!!! 😊

Choir MPA Scores

For the first time in Challenger history, we participated in Choral MPA (Music Performance Assessment). Our Challenger Concert Choir, comprised of 60 awesome students, (77.42% of which were brand new choir students/beginning singers this year), received the following scores for their Music Performance Assessment on March 7th:

1. Repertoire Performance - Overall Excellent!

2. Rhythmic and Melodic Sight-Reading - Straight Superior!

**The rating scale for reference:

1. Poor, 2. Fair, 3. Good, 4. Excellent, 5. Superior

Superior is the highest possible score that you can receive from the judges. We are so very proud of our choir students!

Concert Band Assessment Results!

On March 10th, our 8th grade Symphonic Band participated in the Florida Bandmasters Association District 18 Concert Band Assessment. The 8th-grade band earned a straight superior (A) rating. This is the highest rating possible and means that all 3 of the adjudicators gave the students an A rating on their stage performance.

We are very proud of all of our Symphonic Band members!

Congratulations Dominic Lopez!

If you have been keeping up with our information regarding the Spelling Bee, we had two of our amazing and brilliant students attend the Lee County District Spelling Bee last month on March 9th at Three Oaks Middle School. 6th graders Dominic Lopez and Austin Stout represented Challenger against 14 other local schools in a battle against the dictionary. Our very own Dominic Lopez made it all the way to 8th place in the entire district.

While they may not be advancing to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, we are still so very proud of both Austin and Dominic!
