Western Community Primary School
February 2020
Welcome
It has been another busy few weeks at Western with the children knocking our socks off with their incredible attitude to learning. We have enjoyed welcoming parents into school for parents' evening and booklook and the much anticipated Western Uni Discovery Day. We hope you and your children enjoyed these events as much as we did. If you haven't already please take the time to complete the Western University feedback form (bit.ly/39pkhY4) as we welcome the opportunity to improve the experience for children and families. There have been lots of trips and visits this half term; we hope you have enjoyed hearing all about their adventures from the children. We wish you a very happy half term and look forward to welcoming you back to school on Monday 24th February.

Book Bag Books
If you have a child in Early Years or Key Stage 1 you will have noticed that they have been bringing home one of our new ‘Book Bag Books’ on a Friday. This book is carefully matched to their Read Write Inc. group and contains sounds that we want children to be reading with ease. You may find that the ‘Book Bag Book’ is slightly below the level you would expect. This is deliberate as we want children to be reading these books with fluency and expression rather than struggling to decode the words. We ask that your child practices this book as much as possible over the week and it is returned to school EVERY DAY in their book bag. It is vital that the book is brought back to school every day as it will be passed to the next group of children during one of their RWI sessions. We are asking for everyone’s help to ensure that we have no lost or damaged books resulting in an incomplete set of books for your children.
If you have any questions about the new books please speak to your class teacher or to Mrs Larty who will be happy to help you.
School Uniform
We are all working hard to make sure that we follow the uniform policy which can be found in the parents section on our website. Wearing school uniform helps overcome the worry about "fitting in" with fashions and keeping up with other children. Thank you for supporting us in making sure your child is wearing the correct uniform items.
Community Clothing Scheme on Wallsend High Street has a free bank of good condition Western uniform. We also have a vast amount of good condition uniform available in school should you require any additional items. Mrs Robson, our learning mentor, can be contacted via the school office and she is always happy to help.
Valuables
School cannot accept responsibility for valuables brought in by children, if something is expensive or too precious to be lost, please leave it at home. No toys or balls should be brought into school at any time.

Western Values
This half term we have been thinking about the values of self-control and love.
“If you can learn self-control you can master absolutely anything”
We understand that sometimes there are choices and actions we find hard to resist. Our bodies can occasionally do things impulsively or because we have seen someone else do the same thing. We have been practising the motto ‘stop, think, act’ to give ourselves time to reflect on a choice before we make it and help us to decide if it’s the right thing to do. Learning self-control is so important because it means you are taking charge of your own life. If you are in the driving seat, you can then really take responsibility and always choose the actions and reactions in any situation that will lead you to the happiest, most productive outcomes.
This links closely to our value of love and the importance of treating our friends, family and community with respect making sure to use our self-control and not cause any undue unkindness. Of course to be able to show love to others we first need to show love to ourselves.
“Demonstrate love by giving it unconditionally to yourself. And as you do you will attract others into your life who will love you without condition”.
By appreciating your talents and strengths others will see them shine through too and they will want to spend more time with you. Being loved helps us feel safe and secure, and gives us the confidence to continue to grow and develop into the best we can be. We also agreed that real love is not about what we can get but about what we can give.
Credit Union Savers
Many children are still saving small amounts regularly with the Credit Union. If you would like your child to join please collect a form from Mrs Hodgetts at the school office. The Credit Union Savers is open at 8 am each Wednesday morning in the Community Room (next to the school office).
