Miss Amann's Weekly News
November 11-15, 2013
What a Quick Week!
Wow! This week flew by! We had a lot to do this week and I feel that we accomplished what we set out to do. We took both our Star math and reading tests. We also had Family Reading Night AND our author visit from Candace Flemming (she was truly wonderful!). In between all of that we also did LOTS of learning. Thank you so much for getting your conference confirmation sheets back to me. If anything changes in your schedule, please let me know. I look forward to meeting with you all. On Wednesday, your child brought home a field trip permission slip. Please have the slip and $7 returned to school by next Friday. If you have any trouble with this please let me know. Report cards are in your child's blue folder today!
Reading
This week we working more on non-fiction and comparing and contrasting. We are using a Venn diagram to look at two different objects and list what they have in common and what is different about each item. We then took some time to work on writing a sentence about each. We have been diligently working on writing complete sentences. We have discussed capitals, periods, and complete thoughts. Please ask your child to write a sentence or two for you about the author visit and see if they can demonstrate the knowledge of how to write a complete sentence.
Math
This week we only had two days of math! In those two days, we began working on an addition strategy called 9+1. Basically, I am showing the class that 9+5=10+4. I will be teaching more strategies throughout the next week with the hopes that they will find one that works best for them. Ask your child to show you this strategy at home. As always, please continue to work on math facts at home as these need to be memorized.
Science
This week, we did not move into nutrition and we probably won't until after Thanksgiving. We continued to talk about what scientists do this week and we discovered that scientists use a lot of the same skills that readers do- predicting, comparing, inferring. Next week we will be working on the scientific method and taking our first science assessment at the end of the week. THis will be based on the science vocabulary we have been adding to our science journals.
