Scheduling for 2018-19
Current 6th & 7th Graders
During this next week, students will continue scheduling their classes for next year. Parents will do so through an online format. It is extremely user friendly. You can access the Grade Level Course Registration in the links below or, on our SMS website homepage under "shortcuts" (right side). Reference the picture below.
The scheduling window opened up on 3/2 and runs through 3/16 (Due next Friday!)
Current 6th graders
Next school year, your child will have a choice as to whether or not they take a music course (band, orchestra, choir). Those who do not take a music course will be placed in Art/PE, each for a semester. If your child plans to continue with band, orchestra or choir in 7th grade, he/she will have a choice to take one of the following:
- Art / PE (9 weeks each)
- Academic Lab (Semester)
The 7th grade course registration has been opened back up. If you have already scheduled your child, please do so again as the changes may impact your child's encore decision(s). Thank you to all those who provided feedback on the survey yesterday!
Currently 7th Graders
Incoming 8th graders are automatically enrolled in the following courses for next school year:
- Career Connections (1 Semester)
- Robotics / Medical Detectives (1 Semester)
- Wellness (Health / PE) (Full Year)
March 14: National Walk-Out
At 10:00, we will take part in a moment of silence and during students' Intervention/Enrichment period, students will have an opportunity to email various politicians/representatives to help make their voice heard, if they so choose. Students may also choose to write letters to students in Parkland as well as sign a banner to be sent to their school.
We encourage all parents to have a conversation with their child about the events leading up to this nationwide walkout as I'm sure it will be a topic of conversation among their peers along with what they see on social media. Having a greater understanding is important for our children as they grow socially and emotionally.

MARCH PTA MEETING
Our next SMS PTA meeting is Monday, March 12th, at 1pm in the SMS Media Center. We meet on the 3rd floor of the Media Center. Please stop in the Main Office to get a visitor pass on your way in.
At the March meeting, the Nominating Committee will present a slate of officers for the 2018-2019 school year (no voting at this meeting - voting will take place in April), we will also get more information about the upcoming spring fundraisers, and, as always, a teacher representative and/or Mr. Deitrick is always in attendance to provide an update and answer questions. We hope to see you there!
If you miss a meeting and want to stay up to date on what is going on, you can now view our meeting minutes on the SMS PTA website.
YARD SIGNS
If you have a student involved in winter or spring sports/activities, it's not too late to get a sign to show your pride! PTA is still selling yard signs where you can include your child's name and sport or activity to display in your yard.
Signs are $20, and you can use the attached form to order one. All of the information needed for ordering a sign is included on the form. Yard Signs

Student Grant Writing Opportunity
Attention parents of SMS Eighth Graders!
The eighth grade language arts department is coordinating the purchase of a gift from the graduating class of 2022 to Strongsville Middle School. To raise money for this 8th grade gift they will be holding a fundraising raffle of gift card "baskets" with their students.
The gift that will be given to SMS will be decided upon through a grant-writing process in which students will be writing grants to spend the money that has been raised. The finalists will then appear before a panel of building and district representatives to state their cases. The final decision on the gift item will be decided upon by this panel.
Please help by donating a $5 - $10 gift card that can then be bundled into bigger prizes for the 8th graders to purchase tickets to win. Gift card donations can be turned in to the 8th grade ELA teachers during the week of 3/12 - 3/16. Students will then have opportunities to purchase tickets for the raffle the following week, with the actual raffle drawings to take place on Friday 3/23.
Thank you for your assistance with this activity.
