The start of Massachusetts bay
In 1628 a group of people made a settlement in what is now Salem,Massachusetts.Like the Pilgrims they went to America to practice their religious beliefs. They also came to start farms and also businesses. They made a settlement in 1630 by a group of a 20,000 people.
About Boston
After the puritans took control more then almost all of the land Blackstone decided to sell his remaining fifty acres back to the puritans, which later became Boston common ,and moved to the area that is now rhode island. In 1632,the colonist officially made Boston the capital of massachusetts
Puritans not pilgrims
Unlike the pilgrims, though, the new settlers did not want to break away from the church of England. They wanted to change some of the church's religious practices to make it more "pure." For this reason, they are called puritans.
John Winthrop
In 1630,a second group of puritans, led by John Winthrop, settled in what became known as the Massachusetts bay colony. Winthrop's group of puritans built their settlement south of salem, close to the mouth of the Charles River. They named their settlement Boston, after a town in England. Winthrop hoped that the puritans settlement at Boston would become an example of Christianity living.
Winthrop's words
Winthrop hoped that the puritans settlement at Boston would become an example of Christianity living. In a sermon,he said, "we shall be as a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us."
