DES Explore Virtual Learning
E Pirate Learning Academy Plans Vol. #1- Gifted
Hello all!
I hope and pray that this letter finds you and your family well, safe, and healthy. As we embark on this new platform of learning, I have compiled some simulations and projects that will push my students to use resources (materials and digital) at home to enrich their learning outside of the Explore classroom! Please know that these are all in addition to and different from the assignments from your child’s regular classroom.
I have set up this E-Learning Pirate Explore plan in a way that ALL of my Explore students in grades 2-5 can participate. The flow of the plan is the same set up as the flow of a typical Explore day in my classroom, however, the resources will look different to my students! The students will be able to click on links to access the different activities and projects straight from this newsletter!
My students will need access to the newsletter as it is their "E-Learning Explore Lesson Plan"!!! I have embedded links and files for them to have access to!
Please remember, some of these are ongoing projects that will continue into the coming weeks if necessary. Your child is not to complete all of these activities in one day but I would like to see their progress as they do! Remember, that your child is only in Explore for one day per week!
I am available anytime on Remind 101 and email to answer any questions, or be there in any way for my students and their families during this time. Please feel free to reach out to me! As always, thank you so much for your support of the DES Explore Gifted Program, and please let my kiddos know how much I miss them and can't wait to see them again!
Ms. Fisher
Morning Meeting
Knowledge: is an understanding of facts, information, or a set of skills. When we learn something new, it becomes stored knowledge in our brains. Having knowledge about a topic can help us feel more confident in activities or goals tied to that topic. It also puts us in a place where we can help others.
Interesting fact: Stephen Hawking was born in 1942. When he was 21, he was diagnosed with ALS, a disease that shut down his muscles. Despite his illness, he was very intelligent. He went to Oxford University at the age of 17. He gained a lot of knowledge about space, black holes, and the universe. He has taught classes, written books, and given speeches all over the world.
White Board Wisdom Quote: "To know, is to know that you know nothing. That is the meaning of true knowledge." - Socrates
What a Wonderful Word!
Word: Talaka
Origin: Belarusian
Pronunciation: Ta-la-ka
Meaning: The act of working cooperatively, as when assisting someone in his or her house or field without expecting payment other than a good meal shared at the end of the day.
Facts: Belarusians seem to love potatoes. The average person eats almost 400 pounds of potatoes per year. That's the highest level of potato consumption in the world! Birch sap is a popular drink in Belarus - and there's plenty of it around, as 42% of Belarus is forest! The draniki (potato pancake) is the national dish of Belarus. Other popular meals include machanka (pork stew), kletski (stuffed dumplings), and babka (grated potato pie).
Global Awareness: Can you locate Belarus on the globe? What continent is it located in?
