MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL
___________________________________________
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Your student will be taking some very important Oregon State tests this year. Your student will be taking the newly aligned Smarter Balanced tests in Math and Reading as well as Science if they are in the 5th grade this year. I am so proud of your student for their effort and dedication they have shown in class to become successful learners.
As parents and guardians, you have been a very important and very powerful influence on how your child has progressed. For this reason, I am asking that you (and even other family members) take a few minutes to write a short message of support and encouragement to your child. He or she will read it just before the testing begins.
Sometimes these tests are stressful for students and having a personal encouragement from you, may help lessen their anxiety and encourage them to perform to their full potential! Here’s how to participate:
- You may write a brief message on the attached card or add paper/cards of your own.
- After the message is written, please place it in the envelope and seal it!
- Write your student’s first and last name and teacher on the back of the envelop
- Send it back to Washington (Choose 1 option)
- Give the message back to your student to bring to school (remember to seal it!)
- Drop it off at school personally
- Mail it directly to Washington:
Mrs. Romero
c/o Washington Elementary
3165 Lansing Ave NE
Salem,OR 97301
Your child will unseal the envelope to read your message(s) before beginning the first test. Then he or she will be able to refer to your encouraging message each day before our testing sessions begin. Your encouraging words will help your son or daughter stay confident and positive each day!
You may write your own personal message, or if you prefer, you may use any of these phrases in your brief message:
- Take a deep breath and be amazing!
- Believe in yourself!
- I’m so proud of you!
- Take your time. Don’t give up!
- Doing your best is enough!
- You don’t have to be perfect to be amazing!
- We believe in you!
- You can do hard things!
- Be relaxed. Stay calm. Do your best!
- Be confident in your own abilities!
- You are an amazing daughter/son. Do your best on the test!
PLEASE RETURN ALL NOTES BY FEBRUARY 28TH, 2022. THANK YOU
As always, thank you for your continued support and commitment to your child’s learning!
Mrs. Romero

Five years ago, the Harley-Davidson dealership in Salem reached out to us hoping to sponsor a family during Christmas. They provided Christmas gifts for all of the kids and a food box for the entire family. The next year, Marc Gore, the store manager, had a larger vision, to support not only one family but 50 kids. He and Laura Shaw began recruiting volunteers and working with local organizations, including The Litas, to make this vision come true. Since then, the number of kids sponsored has grown to 140 in total. The event starts with a motorcycle parade from the South Salem Walmart to the Harley-Davidson dealership, where kids are waiting anxiously to see St. Claus and Mrs. Claus riding their motorcycles in the parade. Kids get the opportunity to take individual photos with St Claus and they get a present from him, plus much more to take home.
Marc & Laura have been taking the lead to raise funds for this incredible event every year. If there is any money left over, they donate it to the school for other needs. Previously, they have sponsored the t-shirts for the Washington Relay teams. This year, they donated $1,000 to sponsor the Washington soccer team’s uniforms.
Washington Elementary greatly appreciates Marc, Laura, The Litas, and Timber Town Harley-Davidson, along with all of the volunteers, for their tireless work to support Washington kids and families.

In 2010, Oregon adopted higher K-12 standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics to ensure that all students move from a grade to a degree with the academic knowledge and skills necessary for success beyond high school. Because we raise the bar for what we expect students to know and be able to do, we have also changed the way we measure student progress through our state tests.

Reminders About Traffic Around Our School | Recordatorios sobre el tráfico alrededor de nuestra escuela
It’s a new school year and a good time to share a few reminders about traffic around the school.
Students, parents, buses, staff and school neighbors all share the same travel routes through the neighborhood to and from the school. Peak travel times can create congestion and increase the need for safe and courteous travel practices.
Here are a few ways parents can help us create a safe, respectful and positive environment when driving near the school:
- Please drive slowly. Remember, the speed limit in a school zone when lights are flashing is 20 miles per hour.
- Please don’t park in neighbors’ driveways at any time, even if the driveway is open.
- Don’t block streets, stop in intersections or crosswalks, and please obey crossing guards’ instructions.
- Remind children to stop and look both ways before crossing streets, and to respect neighbors’ property – for example, don’t make shortcuts through neighbors’ yards.
- When lining up to pick-up or drop-off students, leave at least three feet of space between your car and the nearest driveway opening.
- Avoid lining up early for pick-up or drop-off to help minimize congestion.
- Don’t drive in bus lanes, even if no buses are present.
___________________________________________________________________________________________

We are excited to introduce ParentSquare, a new two-way communication platform that will streamline and improve communication with families and staff. It has the functions of both Remind and SchoolMessenger and will eventually replace both platforms. It also includes appointment scheduling options, which may be very helpful for conference sign ups.
It is very important that parents keep their contact information current.
Be sure to let your school office know if you have a new address, email or phone number.
The parent or guardian marked as the primary contact in the student information system will receive automated communication.
Messages will also be sent to the student’s home phone number contained in the database, if different from the primary contact phone number.
