Angela Stockman has incredible expertise in the area of writing and supporting the teachers of WNY in designing writing curricula. She is the Executive Director of the WNY Young Writers' Studio and has recently published "Make Writing," the profits of which go to fund the activities of writers at her studio.

We are excited to have Angela here to offer a series of workshops to meet our regional teachers at every level of learning to help deepen their awareness of developmental writing skills and use best practices to conceptualize and design high quality writing curricula. Whether using the NYS Curriculum Modules and wanting to enhance those or looking to develop a new writing curricula, districts are encouraged to send teams of teachers when possible as each session will end with action planning to build capacity in the district.

All workshops will be held at the Wheelock Education Center, 75 Chestnut Street, Fredonia, NY 14063. Registration will be through WinCapWeb and the links are included below.

Writing is Developmental

In this two day workshop, teachers will consider the developmental nature of writing, examining the connection between the Common Core Learning Standards and research-based instructional and assessment practices. Among some of the learning from this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Define each element of writers’ craft and distinguish its appearance at one developmental level from its appearance at others.
  • Examine best practices for teaching and assessing craft coherently across developmental levels.
  • Define each phase of the writers’ process and distinguish its appearance at one developmental level from its appearance at others.
  • Examine best practices for teaching and assessing process coherently across developmental levels.

Recognizing High Quality Writing Curricula

Teachers will examine best practices for designing high quality writing curricula. They will examine a variety of examples and engage in action planning, intended to help them forward their work. Whether you want to review a curricula already in place or begin to design a new one, this is a great starting place!! Teachers will be able to:
  • Distinguish and describe the relationship between instruction, assessment and pedagogy.
  • Examine the elements of high quality writing curricula and use specific criteria to assess the quality of various writing curriculum samples.
  • Create an action plan for designing high quality writing curricula.


Cost is $100/participants for districts participating in Coser 565.

Designing High Quality Writing Curricula

After assessing needs, teachers will work in differentiated groups to either build capacity or design high quality curricula or if they participated in the Recognizing High Quality Curricula workshop (above) will use what was learned to forward their action plan. Special opportunities will be provided for teachers to explore unites that align with the NYS ELA Curriculum Domains and Modules. Protocols for curriculum design in any context will be shared and teachers will use those to begin drafting.
