CTE "Food Trucks" take to the streets of Avalon
On December 16, students from Avalon's Hospitality Program Year 2 will gain real world experience when they move out of the classroom and on to the streets of Avalon for the culmination of their multi-week food truck project. Food trucks/street vending is a quick growing market. It allows entrepreneurs the ability to start their own business and grow their own brand. This fall, second year CTE students were given the task of creating their own food truck business including designing a logo, choosing what food products to sell (selections range from cookie ice cream sandwiches to orange chicken), creating a recipe, determining food costs, and setting menu prices.
On the day of the event, students will have less than an hour to prep their food on campus before transporting it down to Front Street where they will have 2 hours to sell items to the public. Planning and preparation are vital to ensure they don't run out of food, yet don't have a lot of waste at the end. The money students earn will pay for the cost of their supplies and the remainder will go toward the hospitality program. The "food trucks" will be located on Crescent Ave from 12:00-2:00 PM on Monday, if you are looking for a tasty treat, come down and support our kids in this endeavor.
Baba the Storyteller
November 13th was a very special day for Avalon Schools as we had the pleasure of spending time with Baba the Storyteller! Throughout the day, Baba met with students in all grade levels, K-12 to share music and stories. What made the stories special is each one had a special meaning emphasizing the importance of being kind to one another at all times and in all situations. Students were very engaged and eagerly participated in each show. Later that evening, Baba returned for a special dinner show for our parents. Our CTE program, led by Paul Romo, prepared a lovely dinner with food donated by Singing Waters Church. After families had dinner together, several High School student volunteers took the children to play games and make crafts while Baba entertained parents with stories and music throughout the evening. The evening concluded with a Q&A session and many hugs of appreciation. A special thank you to Avalon Community Church for lending us tables and chairs for the evening! We hope to see Baba here in Avalon again soon!

The girls were also invited to the State Tournament based on their success in the CIF Southern Section play-offs. Daniella Moreno, Yuliana Vega and Virginia Soto were named to the ALL CIF Division 9 Team. Coach Carlos Martinez was named as the CIF Division 9 Coach of the Year. Congratulations on this amazing accomplishment and a history making season.

5th Grade visits CSULB as part of Long Beach College Promise
On December 6th Avalon 5th Graders explored Cal State Long Beach as part of the Long Beach College Promise program. During the trip students were exposed to the university campus by going on a walking tour of classrooms and the student union. They eagerly participated in a large group "game show" style review of the reasons students attend college/university, benefits of attending, requirements for attending including A - G courses, and more. Afterwards, the group enjoyed a picnic lunch at the waterfront park near the Aquarium of the Pacific before heading home on the 2:00 PM boat.
