WHAT A VALENTINE'S DANCE!!!

LOVE THE BUS 2018
WCPSS bus drivers travel thousands of miles daily to pick up more than 80,000 students from home and deliver them to school daily, and then make the trip home in the afternoon. It is a demanding job traveling through our county’s rush hour traffic in buses filled with students.
We hope you will share a kind word or even Valentine’s Day card this week with our bus drivers.
The American School Bus Council founded the Love the Bus program in 2007 to celebrate school bus drivers and provide an opportunity for parents and children to learn more about bus safety.
“Safety is first,” say our bus drivers. They encourage student bus riders to be safe at passenger stops 1) being attentive at the bus stop; 2) waiting for the bus to come to a complete stop with red lights flashing and 3) following their bus driver’s hand signals to safely cross the street and board the bus.
School bus drivers have made the Yellow School Bus the largest and safest transportation system in the country and are deserving of our thanks. By understanding the value of student transportation to our education system, Love the Bus promotes the idea that every person involved in our schools is critical to our children’s success.

ANNOUNCING THE 2018 WAKE UP AND READ BOOK DRIVE!!
From now until - March 3, WAKE up and Read will collect new and gently-used books for children ages birth-12. The goal is to collect 110,000 books – enough to share at ten schools, as well as community centers and child care facilities across Wake County.
The WAKE Up and Read campaign was launched in 2012 to address one of the most critical junctures to lifelong success, reading on grade-level by 3rd grade. This unique community collaboration includes education, civic, philanthropic, and business leaders from across Wake County, all working together to help every child develop the necessary skills for success in school and beyond. Sadly, many Wake County children have no books in their home and arrive for kindergarten without the knowledge and experiences they need to excel. Our shared goal is to ensure that more children from low-income families have the tools and resources they need to become lifelong readers and learners. Working together, we can build stronger students and a stronger community.
Pleasant Union Elementary families can make a difference in our community just by donating books! Please clear your cluttered shelves of books your kids have outgrown, or bring in favorites of your own, so that we can help Wake county children grow up loving books.
Look for the BLUE BOOK COLLECTION BIN at the Pleasant Union Media Center – and please help us fill it!
Even if you don’t have any children’s books to bring in, you can purchase books to support the drive at local retailers, or through the WAKE Up and Read Amazon Wish List.

Thank you for your help!
Can You Help the 5th Grade Helping dogs in Need?
Mrs. Woronka’s class continues to celebrate kindness month by collecting donations for Saving Grace https://savinggracenc.org/our-dogs/, a local dog rescue. The organization has many special needs going on right now that could use funding. Most importantly is their current rescue of 17 dogs from the hurricane devastation in Puerto Rico. They are very proud to be a part of this joint effort with the Humane Society of the United States which has been running hurricane relief efforts on the island. A list for needed items are included in the digital version of my message.
- wet or dry dog food
- peanut butter
- wool or fleece blankets
- 13 gallon drawstring garbage bags
- paper towels
- 6 ft. slip leads
Collection boxes will continue to be in the front lobby to collect donations during the Valentine’s Dance on Friday and after.
If you would prefer donating monetarily, you may contribute on our class fundraising page: https://www.facebook.com/donate/185550905535358/
Any little bit helps. The class appreciates anything you can contribute.
