Life on Mission

Adrienne & Jeremy Penner - serving with MB Mission

Have you ever had one of those weeks where nothing seems to go right? Everything you touch breaks, people disappoint you, and you just can't seem to find joy. Well, we had one of those weeks this past month. Receiving answers we weren't hoping for, our laptop dying, and our car's heat and AC breaking... you name it, it broke down that week. Needless to say I was feeling pretty discouraged. That evening I opened my Bible, hoping for any ounce of encouragement I could find. God drew me to Psalm 42 in the Message.

"Why are you down in the dumps, dear soul?

Why are you crying the blues?

Fix my eyes on God - soon I'll be praising again.

He puts a smile on my face. He's my God.

When my soul is in the dumps, I rehearse everything I know of You"

Fix my eyes on God - soon I'll be praising

Far too often I let my gaze wander and my focus becomes my circumstances, rather than the incredible God that I serve, love and follow. What an amazing reminder to turn my eyes back to where they belong, and in everything to rejoice in my Lord.

The next morning our pastor handed me and Jeremy this quote:

"God wants you to have something far better than riches and gold, and that is helpless dependence upon Him" - James Hudson Taylor

We all have weeks where nothing seems to go how we hoped. However, God is less concerned about the heating in our car or a laptop that works; He desires our lives - surrendered fully to Him, walking in complete dependence on Him and His Spirit. What an amazing God we serve! Are you walking in helpless dependence upon Him?

MB Conference of Manitoba Assembly

Last month, we also had the privilege of attending the Mennonite Brethren Conference of Manitoba Assembly. What an amazing weekend of worship, connecting with pastors and leaders, and being challenged to give our lives to God's mission. Here's a few highlights:

Elton DaSilva opened up by talking about the Good Samaritan, and what it means to live a life on mission.

  • Compassion - causes us to truly see and leads us to action
  • Availability - being attentive and open to however God leads
  • Unafraid of Messiness - willing to engage in brokenness and walk with people
  • Outrageous Generosity - which flows from understanding the gospel, the cost, and God's grace and mercy
  • Unencumbered by Results - "Jesus doesn't call us to write the end of the story; He calls us to participate in the story He is writing"

Bill Hogg (with C2C) then challenged the church to be awakened to the Father's affection, awakened to the Spirit's anointing, and to proclaim, proclaim, proclaim! To pray daily, "Lord give me fresh encounters with the Holy Spirit" and "Lord give me new opportunities to proclaim who you are".

What does it look like to live on mission where God has you right now?

SOAR Heartland

This last week we had the opportunity to be a part of MB Mission's SOAR Heartland program. Basically, this is a 10 day inner-city discipleship event designed for youth to experience God, be challenged out of their comfort zones, and to build relationship with people in the core area of Winnipeg. Our group (Steinbach MB youth) took part in Monday-Friday, doing ministry in the afternoons, and attended SOAR evening worship sessions. It was amazing to go into the city each day, with an awesome groups of leaders, and just ask, "God what do you have for us today. Here we are. Available to be used by you". We had the chance to help serve hot dogs at a VBS barbecue with Living Bible Explorers, sort clothes for Union Gospel Mission, pray and walk around the north end, and connect with people at a drop-in.

A real highlight for me (Adrienne) was the afternoon drop-in at UGM. I absolutely love connecting with people, hearing their stories, and being able to share Christ and pray for people. One of the first young men I started talking to just looked at me and said, "there's a sparkle in your eye. Seriously, you're sparkling. What is it?". Excited for the opportunity, I responded, "you know what that is? It's Jesus - the reason for the joy and hope that I have". The young man smiled at me and then exclaimed loud enough for the whole room to hear "I knew it! Man, Jesus is so awesome! He totally changed my life. Do you want to hear my story?". With a few other people gathered around he began to share how he encountered Jesus, was delivered from addictions, and now can't stop sharing the new life he's found. I'm telling you, this man is a radical evangelist. Even though he lives on the street, he kept telling me "with Jesus, my circumstances can be absolutely awful, but I always have a reason to smile and a reason to walk with hope". After we were done talking he went around the room telling each person that God was awesome. Wow! This is what life on mission with Jesus is all about!

Support-Raising Update

Praise God we are currently at 36% of the monthly financial pledges that we need in order to launch to Thailand. We are still praying big prayers and are hoping to launch to Asia this summer. The harvest fields are ripe, and there is a huge need for more workers. So, as our dear friends and family, we would like to invite you to be a part of what God is doing by partnering with us and MB Mission both in prayer and financially.

We are looking for partners who will commit to giving monthly to this project:

1 partner giving $500 per month

5 partners giving $250 per month

20 partners giving $100 per month

25 partners giving $50 per month

25 partners giving $25 per month

Please prayerfully consider how you can give, out of what God has blessed you with, to build His Kingdom in South-east Asia. We need you!
