Hello and Happy New Year! There’s something about January that feels like a “fresh start”. Maybe it’s the cold, calm mornings or the post-winter break energy of our students, but each January feels like a new beginning, even though it’s often a mid-way point for our school year. Students and staff are excited to see each other every day, we just completed the second academic quarter, and new projects and lessons are kicking-off in each classroom.

Speaking of academics, we have been successful in posting online the curriculum for each course taught at Wyalusing. This is part of our continuous effort of full transparency and my encouragement for parents and guardians to become engaged with our schools. Feel free to review courses that interest you by visiting the Curriculum webpage, here. Please note, some isolated courses may not be visible yet as part of the curriculum review process.

As you know, should the district experience an emergency situation on a school day such as a snow storm or power outage, we will pivot to a remote learning day. Many students took advantage of our Emergency Connectivity Fund grant which placed Chromebooks in homes. These devices, other student issued devices, or other home devices will be utilized for students to connect if the district needs to pivot to a remote instruction day. In other emergency situations, it is crucial that you have a plan in place for your child during an unplanned early dismissal. Please ensure you have back up supervision plans and your child is aware of them. This allows for a safe and efficient return home in an emergency situation.

As we move further into 2023, please review the school calendars so you are aware of important dates including the 2023 Graduation Ceremonies scheduled for Wednesday May, 31st. Finally, be a positive role model for children of our district, focus on the positive in your life and look forward to the many rewarding opportunities students, parents and community members have when you get involved in the success of our students.

Our sixth-grade class did an incredible job honoring 21 area veterans when they hosted a Veteran's Day event on Friday, November 11, 2022 at the Elementary School.

Mrs. Moss had the opportunity to talk about the sixth-grade trip to Washington D.C. and introduce the four students who were selected to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery.

The event also featured a reading from Arya McKernan and Isabella Kitchen who read their essays based on the theme "Proud to Be An American," and entertainment from Mrs. Turner's Kindergarten class was enjoyed by all in attendance.

Hosting the Veteran's Day event was the official kick-off for the sixth-grade trip to Washington D.C. The sixth-grade trip departed a bit delayed due to a winter storm settling into the area, but they were able to reschedule events and still complete all they set out to do on their trip.

Sixth-grade students met with Secret Service Agent, Ryan, to talk about his career and answer questions. Ryan grew up in Sullivan County and likes to meet with local groups visiting the D.C. area. The students had so many questions to ask!

Mrs. Putnam is instructing a Conservation Sciences course offered to juniors and seniors and Dr. Patson is instructing an Invention and Innovation course offered to ninth through twelfth-grade students.

The Conservation Sciences course is designed to allow students to develop skills and knowledge related to wildlife and habitat conservation. Current topics and real-life issues related to conservation are the focus of this course. Currently, enrolled students are enjoying this new course offering, which recently included a visit from a representative from the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

The Invention and Innovation course prepares students with opportunities to apply the design process in the invention or innovation of a new product, process, or system. Dr. Patson teaches the enrolled students to focus on the end product meeting the needs of their customers. Students have had the opportunity to work with 3D printers, vinyl cutting machines, and new Vex Robots.

The two new course offerings are teaching relevant topics to students with exciting new hands-on experiences.
