The Benefits of Gratitude
How Gratitude Practices Support the 5 SEL Competencies
- Self-Awareness: Students develop a deeper awareness of their thoughts and feelings when they reflect mindfully on their experience of gratitude. Choosing to express gratitude also enhances students’ confidence and optimism.
- Self-Management: Choosing to respond with gratitude, when experiencing kindness from others, requires students to regulate their thoughts, feelings and actions.
- Social Awareness: By considering the intentions and efforts of those they are grateful to, students develop social awareness. In particular, they develop the ability to take the perspective of others and to empathize with them.
- Relationship Skills: When they express gratitude, students establish and maintain healthy relationships with others. Planning and carrying out acts of kindness toward others also strengthens relationship skills.
- Responsible Decision-Making: In choosing to express gratitude, students practice responsible decision-making and enhance the well-being of others, themselves and the world around them.

Expressing Gratitude to those who support you
How do they help you?
What do they give up to help you?

What could be a meaningful way to express that gratitude?
Holiday Season Emotional Intelligence ~ Preserving Family Harmony
Everyone wants to feel understood and valued. The ability to get along with others is the glue that holds us all together. Understanding ourselves and others, expressing our emotions in compassionate ways, and respecting ourselves and each other are essential life skills.
How can self-awareness be applied at holiday gatherings?
Listen deeply to conversations.
If you find yourself leaning towards judgment, asking yourself the following questions:
Am I viewing this person as family or foe? Would I have the same reaction if my best friend expressed that statement? If you are reacting rather than responding, get curious instead of furious.
