New TEKS Trainings this Summer
The SBOE has announced K-12 science courses will implement the new streamlined science standards during the 2018-2019 school year. This summer all grade levels will receive training at the Service Center covering changes in each grade level as well as instructional implications to each grade level from changes in the grade levels below. Each training will provide teachers with hands-on lessons to take back to the classroom. All the sessions will be fast paced and lab based so come prepared for a fun science day!
Teachers are welcome to attend multiple sessions if they teach multiple grade levels. Each session contains unique information for the grade levels being covered. Information will not repeat from session to session.
The trainings available this summer are:
K-1st, 2nd-3rd, 4th-5th, 6th-7th, 8th Grade Middle School Overview, and High School.
**If a district wants to schedule a K-12 vertical alignment training for the entire district contact Michelle Sedberry for scheduling in August.

June 12th CISER Middle School Earth Science
Challenge students to apply higher level thinking skills as they engage in relevant, motivating earth science topics. They observe and analyze patterns from data and models to draw evidence for topics specified in state and national standards. Our exciting new earth science activities require students to think like scientists as they work with maps, manipulatives and technology applications to draw evidence for plate tectonics. Students also map earthquakes on real time and generate computer models of volcanoes formed under different conditions. They analyze computer images of minerals at the molecular level to derive a hardness scale based on images and formation, prior to actual testing. Students construct and analyze topography maps using models. The activities are designed to cover standards in grades 6-8 and can be modified for high school level Earth and Space Science.
June 13th PBS Chat: Earth a New Wild –Plains/Oceans
Join science teachers for a live streaming event from 10-12. Join on your computer and watch live from home while interacting with teachers through a live chat. EARTH A New Wild is hosted by Dr. M. Sanjayan, who takes viewers on a stunning visual journey to explore how humans are woven into every aspect of Earth’s natural systems. The series features footage from the most striking places on Earth and encounters between wild animals and the people who live and work with them. This feature will focus on plains and oceans.

Aug. 6th Elementary Curriculum and Planning Day 1st and 2nd Six Weeks
Planning times will be offered during 2018-2019 for K-5th grade science teachers. Each planning time will be structured into two sections. The morning section will have a vertical alignment piece where we will look at content coming up and a teach piece. The afternoon is designed to allow teachers to work in grade level groups to plan and swap ideas.
The morning will be about having a Growth Mindset and making sure you and your students are striving to hit Meets or Masters! This first session of the year will be focused on how to take your data from last year to guide your planning during the 18-19 school year. Approaches is NOT the goal! The 5th Grade STAAR test is a test over elementary content. We will look at the 5th grade STAAR test and look at where the content was covered in K-5 and where your grade level needs to adjust the pacing of the content for the students in your grade level. Each school will have a comparative report of their data available at the training. Teachers will have an opportunity to compare their SE data with other teachers and get ideas from teachers who are hitting a concept out of the park.
Science Specialist Michelle Sedberry will be available for instructional coaching during the afternoon.

The 8th Grade STAAR test is a test over middle school content. We will look at the 8th grade STAAR test and look at where the content was covered in K-5 and 6-8 to inform where your grade level needs to adjust the pacing of the content for the students in your grade level. This exercise will also inform Biology, Chemistry, and Physics teachers where there are foundational gaps in students feeding into the high school. Each school will have a comparative report of their data available at the training. Teachers will have an opportunity to compare their SE data with other teachers and get ideas from teachers who are hitting a concept out of the park.
