Tamanend Connections

We Are Together Tamanend!

March 25, 2013

Mr. Albert Moss, WWII & D-Day Veteran

Our 9th Graders had a real treat on our half-day last week. Mr. Albert Moss returned to Tamanend to share his memories of Normandy. As he recalled fellow comrades who fought beside him, some who made it home safely, and others who sacrificed their lives, he humbly explained that he was simply doing his job as an American soldier. He talked about how little "news" information they had back then, especially while fighting in the war. Weaved into his talk were bits of advise, the best one being: "Be a responsible citizen of the United States of America. Do your part. And be sure to put the best person in the job whether that job is the President of the United States or the dog catcher. It is important to be involved in the process."

We thank Mr. Moss for coming to Tamanend again this year. And we thank him for his service to our country.

Scholastic Young Artist Gold Key Winner!

The Philadelphia Arts in Education Partnership (PAEP) announced that TMS 8th Grader, Kate M. was chosen as a Scholastic Young Artist Gold Key Winner. Congratulations, Kate!

Boomerang Recognition for School Engagement

We had a number of students nominated for Boomerang Asset: School Engagement. Of all of those nominated, we wanted to highlight Julia F. for all of the ways in which she is engaged at Tamanend. As a 7th Grader, Julia set a goal for herself... she wanted to go above and beyond to get involved at school. Since then, Julia has not only been involved in classes as an excellent student, but she is also completely dedicated to our school. During Field Hockey and Softball, she is a confident captain and role model for her teammates. A member of multiple select choral groups, Julia sings the national anthem at school functions. Julia is the president of our NJHS, and through this organization, she devotes her extra time to community service and worthy causes. She spent one of her days off from school creating a showcase for our school's KAD Day. Julia has been a leader among the Tamanend Players traveling to NYC for a Broadway Summit, and this year had a lead role in Anything Goes. Every day, Julia demonstrates engagement by helping our Guidance Office, serving as a school news anchor, and collecting recycling with our Green Team. Julia's actions inspire those around her to become engaged in Tamanend as well. We congratulate Julia for this recognition and thank herfor all she does for our school.

Julia is pictured above with her proud mom.

Spring Break: March 28-March 31

School will open for students and staff on Monday, April 1st. We originally had that day off (as it says on the CB calendar that you get in the beginning of the year); however, due to Superstorm Sandy back in October, the Board voted to have school on Monday to make up one of our missed days. So, we will see you on Monday after a short Spring Break. Check the link below for a full 2012-2013 calendar.

National History Day

On Saturday, Mrs. McFarland, Mr. Landis, and Miss Meenan took 58 students to Ursinus College to compete in National History Day. Congratulations to all competitors. Extra congrats go to our winners: In the Documentary category, third place winners Caitlyn B. and Shaelyn S. for their project titled The Great Hunger: Famine and Migration in 19th Century Ireland. In the Performance category, third place winners David B., Sam L., Jessica M., Valerie P., and Alice B. for their project titled The Man Who Lit the World: Benjamin Franklin and the Turning Point of Electricity and second place winners Ryan S., Taylor M., Katherine A., and Erin O. for their project titled Beatlemania: The Monumental Turning Point in Modern Music. Good luck at the state competition to these three groups of winners and congratulations to all who participated!

World War II Book Talks

Twenty-two 9th Graders voluntarily stayed after school to discuss Hiroshima by John Hersey. This was the second book talk of its kind. The conversation was genuine and intellectual. We thank Mr. Blair for providing this opportunity for students; and kudos to the students who participated!
