2017 Summer Update
Graduation Time!
Section of Commencement Address for 2017
It is always a special occasion when someone can honor students for a job well done and help them celebrate the completion of their formal high school education. This couldn’t have happened without an incredible staff and supportive parents. This is their rite of passage from one part of their lives to the next.
What is unusual is the sheer number of accomplishments this class has achieved. They have earned over $156,000 in local scholarship and UA Scholars, we have a National Merit Scholar finalist and one National Merit Commended student, we have several AP accomplishment award winners, we have seniors who earned volunteering awards, youth leadership awards, several state athletic champions, and so much more.
To me what also makes this class stand out is their heart. They give back. We require seniors complete 30 hours of community service in order to graduate. Many of these seniors graduating have put in hundreds of hours of community service, through coaching youth sports, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Animal Shelter and the Salvation Army just to mention a few. NHS supports one to two families each Christmas with presents and food. They also host Homer’s annual blood drive. In fact, they did such a good job, the blood drive came back for 2 more days in the spring!
When one of our students was diagnosed with cancer our students rose to the occasion. The soccer team organized a clothing sale where the proceeds went to this student. They then planned a soccer camp for young students during an early release and together they raised over $3000. The Student Council stepped up and planned a social night fundraiser and a “Pennies for our Patient” fundraiser and raised over $2500. Another senior planned a 5K run which earned $800 for this cause.
This is just a small sampling of the great things these seniors were part of that make me proud to be principal.
