Why is the dairy food group important?

Dairy is a very important factor in the 5 food groups. Dairy is often forgot about in the food groups because it is seen as not as important as the other 4. Well with out dairy when we get older our bones will be weak and will brake easier. Also, in dairy products they give us other things we need like vitamins, because in dairy products there is vitamin D and the older you age the more Vitamin D that you need. Dairy is the most important when you are growing because that is when we need the most calcium and vitamin D.

What is Osteoporosis?

Many times people have the disease Osteoporosis. Many people do not know about this disease but this disease is very scary. When people when they get this disease do not know that they have it because there is no symptoms. Osteoporosis can occur from not having the essential diet you need from your dairy food group. Osteoporosis can cause weak bones, bones to loose minerals like calcium, bones to become fragile, and for bones to break easily. Mostly women are affected by this disease but it can still affect males as well. 34 million people have low bone mass placing them at risk because people don't pay as much attention to the dairy food group. Some good news about this disease is that it is preventable for most people, so if you don't want this disease pay attention to the dairy food group.

How can you prevent Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is disease that a lot of people have but there is also ways a person can precent this disease. There are 3 ways that a person can prevent this disease and that is by building healthy bones when young, having a healthy diet, and having a healthy lifestyle.

Apple Yogurt Smoothie

Makes 2 Servings
Prep Time: 5 min
Cook Time: 5 min

2 cups low-fat vanilla yogurt
1 granny smith apple, cored, peeled and diced
1/2 cup orange juice
1/2 cup ice
2 tablespoons honey

Mix all ingredients in a blender or food processor until smooth and pour into tall glasses. Garnish with sliced almonds, julienne mint and 1/2 teaspoon of honey, if desired.
