Impact Unit
Our 5th graders will be working on Unit 4:Impact, in which students will be reading about the Revolutionary War period. The theme of this unit is “How Can Taking Action Impact a Community”. Students will be learning about how colonists felt about the various taxes imposed by Parliament and King George III. They will be learning the perspectives of Loyalists and Patriots and how those viewpoints influenced how events were told. Please talk to your children about what they are learning, they should be eager to share!!

Community Unit
Literacy:
We are currently finishing our first unit in Language Workshop - What Impacts a Community?. We will begin Unit 2 - What Influences Relationships next week. We will focus on the essential understanding that relationships are shaped by beliefs, values, and experiences. 5th graders are working on the RACE strategy for developing their literature responses. The RACE strategy stands for Restating the question, Answer the question, Cite evidence to support their answer, and Explain your thinking. The expectations for middle school is that students have a well developed practice of responding to literature with a thorough and in-depth answer.
Math:
Students have been studying various models for division. The Base 10 Blocks model was used to review understanding of what division is and to help lay the foundation of what happens to a number when breaking it up into groups. Both the area model and partial quotient model were used to give students division strategies to meet the following standards:
- I can solve whole-number quotients of whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division.
- I can illustrate and explain division calculations by using equations, rectangular arrays and/or area models.
- I can multiply and divide decimals to hundredths using models or drawings and strategies based on place value and properties of operations. Relate strategies to a written method and explain the reasoning used.
At fifth grade the standard algorithm for division is not a common core standard that needs be mastered, but with students using the partial quotient models it is a easier transition for students to be able to use the standard algorithm.

Six Flags Reading Program
Six Flags Reading Program
For completing 6 hours of reading outside of school time, students in kindergarten through grade 5 are eligible to earn a free ticket for Six Flags Great America. Please see the following link for more details and a reading log for you to print if you choose to have your child(ren) participate in this program. Reading logs will not be sent home with the students; it will be your responsibility to print them for your use. If you have no way to print a reading log, please contact your child's teacher and one will be sent home.
Your child may begin reading and recording his/her reading minutes any time! Completed reading logs are due by Friday, February 15th.
Please note: Six Flags does not allow 4K students to participate in this program.
Any questions can be directed to Mrs. Krahn, Rose Glen's coordinator for Read to Succeed.
