Upcoming Events
Parenting Corner (The One Pager)
Believe it or not, we have entered the time of the year when we really start thinking about next year! As we prepare for next year, we start creating class lists (this process remains somewhat fluid until just before school starts because of a number of variables that can change over the summer: students can move; teachers can move; etc.). During this process, we look at various pieces of student data: reading ability; academic strengths and weaknesses, social development, etc. and, like last year, we would like a piece of data from you! While we obviously can not entertain parents requesting specific teachers for their child(ren), we would love some specific input from you and your child(ren)!
Your child should be bringing home today (or it could be Monday) a piece of paper that has four large, blank boxes on one side and is titled “One-Pager” and on the other side has specific questions on the back (a Spanish version is also going home). The “One Pager” asks for kids (and parents) to identify the students “Strengths, Preferences, Interests, and Needs” (S.P.I.N.). Please take some time this weekend or early next week to complete this with your child(ren) and then return it to your child’s teacher. For some more information (and a digital version you can complete and return to your child’s teacher), please go here: https://www.imdetermined.org/resource/one-pager/

Parent Traffic Flow
While we received glowing feedback from our recent impromptu safe school audit, one item of concern was when school traffic backs up to Route 33 during afternoon pickup time. If you find yourself (or notice another parent) stopping on Route 33 because our afternoon pick up line has backed up that far, please loop around the teacher parking lot on the east side of campus and join the younger grades pick up line that is directly adjacent to the school building. Even if you have an older student, it is safer for you to join that line and alleviate any potential for an accident on 33.
We’ve recently had an increase in the amount of parents who park in the front parking lot in the morning to drop off their children. At times, this is unavoidable and we understand that! Other times, parking there to drop off your children to avoid waiting in the parent dropoff line causes two challenges: first, it takes away possible spots for teachers who are arriving in the morning; second, it slows down the parent dropoff line because we need to stop traffic for children to cross safely. Please be courteous and avoid parking in the front lot if you can.
Thanks for helping us keep your kids safe and for traffic to move efficiently!
A Spike In Sickness
Earlier this month WHSV aired a piece entitled, “Keeping Sick Kids Home Stressed for Fighting Spread of Infection” and I was tempted to yell, “Amen!” This 45-second story is worth a watch before you read the note from Nurse Ang below: https://www.whsv.com/video/2023/04/03/keeping-sick-kids-home-stressed-fighting-spread-infection/
Dear Parents-
We are seeing an increasing number of sick children here at school. A child who is sick will not be able to perform well in school and is likely to spread the illness to other children and staff. We suggest making a plan for childcare ahead of time so you will not be caught without a comforting place for your child to stay if he/she is ill.
Our school policy states that you should not send your child to school if he/she has:
● Fever in the past 24 hours
● Vomiting in the past 24 hours
● Chills
● Diarrhea in the past 24 hours
● Sore throat /Strep Throat (must have been taking an antibiotic for
at least 24 hours before returning to school)
● Bad cold, with a very runny nose or bad cough, especially if it has
kept the child awake at night
● Head lice – until your child has been treated according to the nurse
or doctor’s instructions
If your child requires over the counter medication such as tylenol, ibuprofen or cough/cold medication to feel better then they need to remain home from school.
Please DO NOT send any medication with your child to school, this includes cough drops. Parents must make arrangements with the school Nurse if medication is needed here at school.
If your child becomes ill at school and the school nurse feels your child is too sick to benefit from school or is contagious to other children, you will be called to come and take him/her home from school. It is essential that the school has a phone number where you can be contacted during the day and an emergency number in the event you cannot be reached.
These guidelines will help us protect all of our students.
If you have any questions or are unsure if you child should attend school or not do not hesitate to call Nurse Angie at (540) 438-1965 or email atusing@rockingham.k12.va.usWalk/ Bike to School Day (May 3)
