In Case You Missed It:
Many of you are aware that many of our Hispanic students did not attend school on Thursday due to a social media push. It encouraged immigrants to not attend work or school to show the impact it would have on our country if they were not here. We normally have 3-5% absent each day. On Thursday we had 11% of our students not in attendance. This act impacted my heart so much. I want all students and families to feel welcome in our school. I am not comfortable with anyone in our school family feeling unwanted. I'm aware that we have had a rise in students using racial slurs and comments which will not be tolerated at SanLee. Graffiti in bathrooms has also increased recently. None of this will not be tolerated. Please make sure to report to the office immediately so admin is able to handle quickly to show our intolerance for this type of behavior. I spent a lot of time researching and reading about racial tolerance in schools trying to help me to make sense and find ways to address what we are seeing. I will be adding some articles below for you to read which I found helpful guidance. Counselors and admin are meeting Monday and this will be one of the topics we discuss. If you have any suggestions, please share.
If you want to see how a school works together, plan an after hours event like a dance. There is no way that the sponsoring club can do it by themselves. It takes LOTS of volunteers to handle all the working parts to make it a successful event for our children. The SGLA Sweetheart Dance was extremely organized, well staffed, and lots of fun for OVER 300 middle schoolers and adults! Thank you to the follow staff for the following staff and families for the help:
Kisha Derr, Jamie Cox, Cynthia Wicker, Bonnie Marshall,Brianna Simmons, Libby Washington and daughter, Lauren Black, Brian and Karen Caldwell, Biancca DiMarcello, Nejla DeLambert + 2 former Stallion/HS volunteers, Kevin Degon, Denise, Tiffany, and Jasmine Green and Brooke, Alice McIver and granddaughter, Rena Szakaly and Landon, Ellen Duncan and Quincy, Katie Kline, Katie White, Sarah Yoder, Theresa Blewett, Ashley Inman, Linda Davis, Coach DJ and Delaney, Nathan Faulk, Monica Hawes, Jessica Cole, Betsy, Rodney, Palmer, and Morgan Bridges and 2 college friends. Thank you also to our cooler donations from the Pienaars, Cindy Quiggle, and Debbie Bryan. Jamie also wanted to say an extra special thank you to Ellen Duncan for all the help with tickets at lunch! WOW! It really does take a village!
AVID site team met last week and have made plans for recruitment and retention for our AVID elective class. The application is live on Vincent's webpage with a link from the SanLee page now through March 31. Site team members will conduct interviews the second week in April. Please encourage students that have a GPA of 2.5-3.5 (B/C), score 2's,3's, or 4's on EOG's that try hard and have a will and desire to go to college. We do have paper copies of the application available in the office and outside Vincent's class. Most kids need encouragement from someone that believes in them to step out and apply for something like AVID. Many of our students need someone like YOU to do this.
Christy Degon, Kevin's wife, nominated SanLee for a math and science grant through her employeer, Holmes Oil Company. We received a $500 check on Friday. We are so fortunate to have wonderful people and business looking out for us!
