Luce Notes
Important information, dates, and school updates.
What's the scoop at the Luce?
Hello Luce Families,
We're back to school this week. The week before break, was amazing with Top Secret Science (TSS). Thank you to all the families that joined us during the family nights. Please see the important information for this week.
Masks Are Optional in Canton Public Schools as of February 28
Masks are optional for all students and staff, regardless of vaccination status. We know this is a very personal choice and encourage you to have conversations with your students before returning.
In terms of our standing routines around lunch, snack and mask breaks, we will continue those as we have been. All classes will still participate in mask break times, not just the students wearing masks.
We will continue to employ all mitigation measures, including open windows and air purifiers.
Masks will remain required in the following spaces for all community members: on buses/vans, within the health office, and for the five days after returning to school following a positive COVID case.
We want to be sure that we all move forward in the spirit of compassion, support, respect, and inclusion. As adults, we need to model this for our students; we will make space for those to make personal choices without questioning them or feeling like we need to explain. We will work to suspend all judgment for others’ choices. I would encourage you to make whatever choice is right for you and your family and know that you might shift along the way and across contexts.
More information will be provided regarding masks on school transportation this week.
I am attaching two things that might be useful: a social story that may be helpful to use with children and the current updated Face Coverings Policy.
Luce Playground
The new Luce playground is coming to the Luce this summer! The Luce Playground worked hard to identify the best playground possible for our school. Also, students engaged in the democratic process to select key colors for the playground slides as well as the type of monkey bar for the playground. Please see pictures of the Luce Playground below. We can't wait!

Meet The Newest Crew Member: Monique Monteiro
My name is Monique Monteiro, and I live in Easton with my husband and three children.
I have worked with children in various roles from grades pre-k-5 for the last seven years.
In my spare time, I volunteer for the Boys Scouts, the local Marching Band, the high school softball team, and the Iron Tigers Robotics team.
I enjoy photography and being creative. I have two dogs, five birds, and three fish tanks. I think the best day of the school year is the 100th day. It is amazing how much everyone has grown from the beginning of the year until then.

UPDATES!!!
Nurse Bonner's Updates
Welcome back students and staff! As we move forward to mask-optional; as a reminder per DESE, school health offices are health care settings and as such, masks will continue to be worn by all individuals in these offices.
The health office will continue to conduct our mandated state screenings throughout the month of March. (Vision, hearing and heights/weights (BMI)).
Please make sure you send your child to school with their eye glasses if they wear them.
If your child has a medical condition excluding them from the mandated health screenings, please provide the health office with a physician signed letter for exclusion. Parents that wish to waive the BMI screenings can send in a letter to the health office annually stating their wishes.
Below is information from the Canton Public Schools Handbook regarding the screening policy:
SCREENINGS
Health screenings are mandated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and are conducted in the following grades at the Luce School.
Vision: Grades 1-5.
Hearing: Grades K-3
Body Mass Index (BMI): Grades 1 and 4
Spinal Screening: Grade 5
Parents/guardians are notified in writing when a student does not pass their health screening.
School nurses will work with families to obtain the appropriate referrals and follow-up services as needed.
As always, feel free to call or email Nurse Bonner, with any questions.
Luce CAPT Update
CAPT News https://sites.google.com/view/luce-capt/
CAPT Treasurer We are looking for a new treasurer for next year. This is a great role for someone who would like to be involved in CAPT and the school, but who doesn't necessarily want to run a major event or volunteer in person. Much of the work can be done at home. Excel skills are a must. Someone who has current or past experience in accounting, finance, or any type of data analysis or reporting would be great. Anyone who is interested or has any questions should send us an email (lucecapt@gmail.com) as soon as possible. It would be great if we could find a person to shadow our current treasurer through the end of the year.
Chainsaws, Cheeseburgers, & Rock 'N' Roll Assembly Grades 3-5 will be having a motivational speaker on February 28.This will be a fun, funny, ultra-fast-paced, 40-min, multi-media slideshow with live narration. It's all about empowering people to chase their dreams, no matter what they might be. https://chainsawscheeseburgersandrocknroll.com/
Boostershon In just 4 weeks, we’ll kick off our Luce Boosterthon 3/18! Our goal is to raise $15,000 for in-school programming and enrichment. This year more than ever, we need additional funds to provide an excellent educational experience for all of our students. More details to come as we get closer to kickoff!

Substitutes Needed (Repost)
Do you have a college-age child coming home for winter break? If so, would they be interested in subbing for the Canton Public Schools while they are here? Subbing is a great way to keep busy, make money and get real-world work experience. In Canton, we have had great success bringing our own, former students back to help support our students and schools during this busy time year. If your child is interested, please have them fill out this sub application packet and email it to Kim Eardley (eardleyk@cantonma.org) to get the process started. If they fill it out before they get home, the process can begin asap!
Students in their first year of college are able to sub at the elementary and preschool levels only.
Students in their second year or beyond can sub at all school levels.
