Week 29 Update: April 4th - April 8th

Hi Families,

Hope you all had a relaxing and refreshing Spring Break. Thank you for taking the time to review your child's report card and return the envelope. Can you believe that we are now in the 3rd trimester?

We had PARCC testing this week and tried to stay on schedule to continue our learning.

Thanks to the PTO and parent help for another great Pizza Day. The students are always very excited about this special day.

There is a lot to come in this final stretch in 5th Grade. Please help your child stay focused on the academics as well as the fun things on our calendar. :)

This week in Math, the students reviewed what they learned in 4th grade about angles.

They remembered that :
* the angles in a triangle add up to 180º
* the sum of angles measures on a line is 180º.
* the sum of angle measures at a point is 360º.
* vertical angles have equal measures.

They started Chapter 13, which is on properties of triangles and four-sided figures. They watched a Math Antics video about how to classify triangles (see below) and practiced identifying the triangles based on sides or angle measurements.

Social Studies

In the next several weeks, our class will travel back in time to the 1860s, to an America torn apart by economic, social, and political issues too deep and divisive to repair without a major conflict. That conflict was the Civil War (1861–1865). This week we learned the causes leading up to the Civil War.

Each week (beginning next week) we will study a specific year of the war. Students will learn about an important battle, hear dispatch notes, participate in common soldier interviews, and many other activities. At the end of each week they will play Battle Jeopardy and take a quiz over the material learned that week.

Ask your Student about:

* Rain Cinquain - National Poetry Month

*PARCC Testing

*Civil War teams

*Our new read aloud, The False Prince
