Weekly School Blog Jan. 7th-11th, 2019
Our journey and wonder in learning labs this week.
Artists are showing growth in understanding of shape, size and color depicted in their Penguin Still Life Paintings. The penguins look like they may come to life just like our good friend Puck! Students are also learning about different species of penguins as they decide which one their painting best represents. So far students have painted Rockhopper, King, Macaroni, Adelie, Little Blue penguins!
This month's literacy story journeys are inspired by the author Peter H. Reynolds. We love this author because all of his books give the message to try your best, be yourself, and believe that you can! This week our journey's have taken us through The Ish, The Dot, and Play from the Heart!
We began our winter yoga flow, discussing our Mantra: healing winter wellness- "Take care of your body it's the only place you have to live". An introduction to knew wisdom words "Let us love winter for it is the spring of genius" and practicing our winter focus breath a power breath technique. We will begin the yoga story Jenny's Winter Walk. Student book pick for the month in yoga workshop is "I am Peace" by Peter Reynolds. In Music Appreciation, we are learning about Opera music. The students learned some simple facts about Andrea Bocelli. Reading the Peter Reynolds story Play from the Heart students are inspired to play and listen to music from the heart. Students created finger note paintings while listening to the beautiful sounds of Opera music. Students also practiced high notes and low notes during music workshop with the song I Can Sing High Notes. We will continue exploring Opera music throughout the month of January.
Next week we are looking forward to making our own salsa from our garden harvest, enjoying some warm hot cocoa, opening a cocoa cafe (dramatic play), pottery workshop, and hat and Kid Inventor's Day!
Wishing everyone an awesome weekend.

Kid Inventors- If you think it you can make it!!!!
Students first research existing inventions, read about famous inventors and watch a video on child inventors. Then students create a sketch showing their plan for their invention. Students then use recyclable and upcycled materials to build their invention!
Exploring kaleidoscopes!
Exploring fun facts about the first kaleidoscope invented by Sir David Brewster.
Painting Jackson Pollock Style!
Getting to know the world's greatest artist Jackson Pollock.
Our featured artist in the Atelier "Outdoor Art Studio".
Artists have a huge amount of influence on shaping history and culture and it’s a good idea to give students a sense of how powerful art can be. Not only does this give them a greater understanding of the past, but it can also get them excited about what they will create in their future.
Jackson Pollock’s work wasn’t created in the traditional ways with the traditional painter’s tools. Instead of using a brush and an easel, Pollock placed his canvases on the floor and used sticks, dripping fluid, sand and knives to add paint. He used flinging, dripping, pouring and splattering techniques, using the movements of his whole body to control the flow of the paint.
Pollock stopped naming his pictures (giving them numbers instead) because he didn’t want people to look for a subject matter or a meaning in his art. Instead, he wanted to appreciate the painting for what it was.
2019 Yoga Intentions
"Everything that starts in the universe starts with intention." Deepak Chopak
How To Set an Intention
- Connect with the elements of your life that are most significant to you and bring you the greatest joy, satisfaction, and energy. What gives you passion and fills you with a sense of purpose? Listen to that inner voice. It connects you to truth and deeper meaning. We all deserve to live a life that has purpose and connects us to the world we are living in. Know that and feel that deep within your heart so you can learn to trust your calling.
- Make a list and share it with a close friend who is supportive and can hold you accountable to take action. Do something today to help you demonstrate your commitment to your intention.
- Create a word or a short phrase that sums up your intentions. Last year, my words where compassion and expansion. These words became my mantra and helped me to stay open and expand my vision. I meditated on these phrases so my brain was able to integrate them into my actions. When I look back, they did help me to stay open and follow my heart, especially when fear and doubt were creeping in.
- Once you’ve integrated, let it go! You’ve planted the seeds into your awareness. Let it go so you don’t attach and grip. Awareness is a spacious feeling and creates energy for our heart’s desires to flow to you. Intention is much more powerful when it comes from a place of contentment rather than if it arises from a sense of lack or need. Stay centered and refuse to be influenced by other people’s (or your own) doubts or criticisms. Your higher self knows that everything is alright and will be all right, even without knowing the timing or the details of what will happen.
- Trust that there is a power greater than you to orchestrate the complete fulfillment of your intentions. Don’t listen to the voice that says that you have to be in charge, that obsessive vigilance is the only way to get anything done. If you force the outcome, it may not be as good for you as the one that comes naturally. You have released your intentions into the fertile ground of pure potentiality, and it will bloom when the season is right.
Kids Say the Darndest Things
Garrett and Johnny were having a conversation about a playdate that they have been trying to plan. They were discussing who's house to have it at. Johnny said he would like to have it at his and this is the rest of the conversation:
Garrett: But do you like goats?
Johnny: Yes (puzzled look)
Garrett: Well then we have to go to my house cuz I have goats!
Johnny: (surprised) You Live in A Barn???!!!!
Miss Terra stepped in and explained that Garrett has a family farm and then Miss Terra and Miss Michelle offered that they should try goat yoga at Garrett's house!
Miss Terra was having a group discussion about inventors. Boyan Slat a 22-year-old inventor followed the same passion as Johnny, cleaning up the ocean, specifically the Great Pacific Garbage Patch! In the discussion, Miss Terra explained that he had to raise 30 million dollars to create his inventions. Johnny exclaimed, "Well I can't do that, I will spend my whole college fund!"
Today we were discussing birthplaces. Miss Terra and Miss Michelle shared that we were not born in Florida. Clara exclaimed, "I was born on my Kitchen floor!!!!!!"
As students were working in the art studio this week the project took an unsuspected turn. Students were painting on paper that had a gold frame around it similar to the one that is in the story The Dot by Peter Reynolds. As students were painting they began having an organic conversation about how they felt like they had jumped into their painting. What began as just a small dot suddenly resulted in magnificent tales of being inside a painting! A child's imagination knows no boundaries!

2019 Enrollment
Enrollment for 2019-2020 School Year
Based on many inquiries to the school about new enrollment and new families already securing their space in the program for 2019-2020 school year we will be sending out re-enrollment for our existing students and siblings early in February. Typically we do this in March but because of the volume of interest for next year, we will need to evaluate space in the program for new incoming students. Be on the watch for information coming out to all families in February 2019. This will include our Kindergarten and First Grade program.
Re-enrollment forms and Registration Fee submitted by the deadline will guarantee the student's space for the upcoming school year. If forms and registration fee is not submitted by the deadline we will assume you are forfeiting your space.
