From Mr. Backmeyer's Desk...
Welcome to Spring in Indiana! With Spring comes green grass, flowers blooming and early morning cool temperatures and afternoons that become warmer. Please make sure that your child is dressed in layers for the times that they are out at recess! ALSO...this is another time of the year that our Lost & Found begins to grow dramatically when the students begin to shed those warm coats and sweatshirts from the mornings!
NEXT YEAR? 2019-2020? Below is the school calendar for the next school year to view and download. Listed are the dates for our Fall Break, Winter Break, and Spring Break! Attendance is key in the education of your student and it would be appreciated if you could take your vacations during these times we are out of school.
CHECK OUT OUR COMMUNITY EVENTS FOLDER!
This is where the community places information for you about the arts, sports, library events, etc. It is updated weekly and always has NEW things for your student(s) and your family!
Please check this weekly...if not you are missing out! See link below or click here!
KNOW Someone that will be a Kindergarten Student this Fall? Are they registered?
If you know a family with a student in your neighborhood or is a family friend, ask them if they are registered for kindergarten for the 19-20 school year! The student will need to be 5 years of age by August 1, 2019. If they are not, please encourage them to call the school at 812-376-4423 and come in and get registered for next school year! Parents must present the following items to register their child for school: the child’s birth certificate, immunization records, and proof of residency. The proof of residency can be a utility bill (not a cell phone bill), but the address reflected must match the student’s home address. Thank you for spreading the word!

Ask any writer about the hardest part of writing and you’re likely to hear the same answer: Getting started.
What’s true for a seasoned writer is even more true for an elementary school child who’s staring at a blank sheet of paper. What on earth will she write about? And how can she possibly fill all that white space? It can seem overwhelming.
You can help your child get off to a running start by asking questions and offering comments to guide her thinking. If your child is asked to write about a personal experience, for example, follow these three steps:
- Help your child make a list of her recent experiences: the day she put up the tent in the backyard (and watched it fall down); the day she scored a goal in her soccer game; the time she sprained her ankle; the day her baby sister arrived. Then, have her select one of the experiences to write about.
- Ask your child to tell you about the experience. Telling a story is an effective way to remember the key points. Why were she and her dad putting up the tent? Where was the tent stored? Did they read the instructions? Your child can even draw pictures about what happened first, second and third.
- Have your child answer the basic newspaper reporter questions: who, what, when, where, why and how. Answering these types of questions will help her collect all of the important details she needs for her writing.

BCSC TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION - SEAT BELTS
BCSC is fortunate to have many buses equipped with seat belts to ensure that students are safe while they ride. Students are taught at the beginning of the school year the procedure to operate the seat belt. Please know that if students choose to not wear their seat belt, or choose to remove it during transit, disciplinary action may result. Thank you in advance for discussing the importance of wearing a seat belt with your child, as our goal is to keep children safe while riding both to/from school and during field trips. Feel free to reach out to the transportation department with questions or concerns.
