We are giving out a large number of masks each week. Please send a mask/face covering or two with your child each day they come to school. If your child comes to school without a mask/face covering multiple days in a row we will be calling home for someone to bring them a mask/face covering.

School Attendance

A reminder for all families that the AHS Daily Assessment needs to be completed and actioned each morning prior to coming to school. If your child is experiencing symptoms please choose:

  1. “Flu-like symptoms”

  2. “other illness or injury” If they are experiencing symptoms that you do not deem to be flu-like, or your child has a medical appointment.

  3. “parent excused.” If your child is experiencing no symptoms at all, please choose this. The parent excused absence should only be chosen if you are keeping your child home for a reason that does not pertain to a medical issue. (i.e dance competition)

The child’s attendance is a parent’s indication that this has been completed and the child is able to come to school. Once this messaging is sent out, we should not normally be following up with parents who select parent excused as an absence code. Asking for a medical note for a pre-existing condition should also only occur in rare cases in consultation with admin.

Our guideline for how we handle students with presenting symptoms during the day is the AHS Daily Assessment. If you have any questions, please speak to your admin.

Breakfast for Learning

Every morning and throughout the day our students have the opportunity to access some healthy snacks to fuel their brain and body. We do receive grants to run this program but are also looking for monetary donations. If you would like to make a monetary donation to this program please reach out to the office.

Emergency Drills

During the school year we complete a variety of school safety drills such as Fire Drills, Shelter in Place, Lock Downs and Hold and Secure. We complete these drills to ensure our students and staff are safe in every circumstance that could occur.

When we get closer to the Lock Down drills we will be informing parents through this newsletter as sometimes Lock Downs can be scary for students. We encourage conversations at home about this drill. Teachers will also be preparing students through conversations during class time.

Learning Distribution Grant

This year in addition to building our classroom communities, our Grades 1-3 teachers will work with students to assess and address any potential setbacks in literacy and math learning. Each year, we use the EICS Literacy and Numeracy Frameworks to determine areas which require focused support and set learning goals. However, the disruption to in-class learning during the Covid-19 pandemic may have resulted in some of our students not attaining the skills they would have in a regular year. As a result, targeted literacy and math assessments designed and supported by the division will be used with all students in Grades 1-3 as an extension to the classroom processes already in place to identify students who require additional intervention to develop their skills and close gaps.

Alberta Education has provided funding to support schools with staffing and resources for these supplementary interventions. Students in Grades 2-3 will complete specialized assessments in September and students in Grade 1 will be assessed later in the school year. Interventions in both groupings will begin shortly afterward the assessments are complete. Students identified as requiring additional support will receive 30 hours of supplementary programming in literacy and between 20-30 hours of support in math in small group formats from specialized intervention teachers. During and after the intervention period, student progress will be monitored and communicated with classroom teachers and parents. A final communication of gains will also be provided to Alberta Education.

SCHOOL PATROL-in front of school

We do have our Gr. 4's provide crosswalk patrol in front of the school but this likely will NOT occur for a few weeks until they have been properly trained. Please be careful using the crosswalks as our front street (53 Ave) is very busy before and after school.
