Next week we have a schedule change due to the student day off on Friday, February 12. The change happens on Wednesday, February 10th. Students will still be remote this day, but we will run an Even day schedule. Teachers will notify all students of this change at the beginning of the week.
For parent engagement, we will have a site council meeting on Tuesday, February 9th from 5:30 pm- 6:30 pm. West site council meetings are a great place to learn about upcoming events, talk about our current realities, and plan for the future to meet the needs of West students and families. The meeting is held via Webex and the link is below in the newsletter.
Also, 8th-grade parents should have received important information about Free State High School enrollment meetings. These informative meetings are a great place to learn about the transition to high school for both parents and students. The meeting is online and the information can be located below, also a few details about the Lawrence High School enrollment that were finalized this morning are below as well.
Winter weather is approaching this weekend.
Stay warm, stay safe,
Dr. Kempf

6th Grade ELA Word Wall!
In Mrs. Bowen's 6th grad ELA class they have learned so much in ELA already this year that their word wall has exploded outside the box of the bulletin board and onto the wall! At the beginning of the year, she decided to start documenting the things they are learning by creating this word wall. She didn’t think they would run out of space this soon!!

~STUDENT SUCCESSES~
Current & Former West Students (and sisters) are the STARS of OVATION!
The Ovation! Districtwide (Virtual) Talent Show is coming up at 7 p.m. February 12. The Lawrence Schools Foundation and Lied Center of Kansas are sharing a sneak peek of the stars of the show selected by audition to perform. Next in the talent show's lineup is Alannah Lohfeld, FSHS ninth grader (and former WMS student), and Aleisha Lohfeld, West MS seventh grader. They will be performing an Irish step dance as “The Galway Girls.” Born in Galway, Ireland, they moved with their family to Lawrence 2 1/2 years ago. The sisters both started Irish dancing when they were four years old, and they are now in the highest competitive league of Irish dancing.
In addition to the Ovation! performers, two Free State students, both summer interns with the Lied Center, are the executive producers of the show. Lindsey Hefty and Sarah Edmonds produced Ovation! as the culminating activity for their internship.
Learn more about this virtual event at https://bit.ly/2MmfRuF. This year's event is free but donations to the Lawrence Schools Foundation are encouraged and appreciated.
