Message from the Principal
Week of April 4, 2022
Message from the Principal
Dear Virginia Lake Families,
Our staff will soon begin to build classes for the 2022-2023 school year. This is one of our most important tasks to prepare for the coming year. Throughout this process, our goal is to place students in the best possible learning setting. We try to build classes that are balanced in terms of learning needs and styles, gender, ethnicity, emotional and social development, academic achievement, behavior, and special education needs. Although the process will be starting soon, classroom and teacher assignments will not be finalized or shared with parents until August through Infinite Campus.
Students will be assigned to heterogeneous classroom groups by their current classroom teachers, as they are in the best position to make student assignments. They have worked with the children throughout the year and have the best handle on individual educational needs.
Our placement process is a team effort that is completed with great care and consideration. Teachers review initial lists with specialists to ensure that we have not overlooked any aspect of appropriate placement based on the factors listed above. You may want to share information or specific needs that might help us in the sectioning process. This should be put in writing with reasons outlined and related to the balance factors listed above in the first paragraph. Please submit your letter to me via email no later than Friday, April 29, 2022.
Because it is not possible to grant requests for specific teachers, we ask that your letter focus on your child’s learning style, significant learning experiences for him/her and/or the type of teaching style to which your child responds best. We ask that you do not make requests for placement into a specific classroom for your child. Such requests cannot be considered, as this opportunity cannot be made available to all children. Please remember that personal statements about individual staff members are wonderful testimonials to our talented staff, but should not be included. We trust that you will rely on our professional judgment as we group the children with the idea of creating the best learning environment for everyone. Once the classes have been announced, it would be under very special circumstances that a change would be considered. What might appear to be a minor adjustment can have a significant impact on the make-up of a class.
Thank you to each of you for your continued cooperation, support, and understanding.
Sincerely,
Patti Van Winkle, Principal
VL's New Interim Assistant Principal
Teacher Appreciation
Teachers inspire us all year long, but next month is a special time for you to show how you feel. Teacher Appreciation Day is May 3, 2022. The one-five Foundation offers a wonderful way to acknowledge someone who has made a lasting impact and supports innovative education. It is easy to participate in this much-appreciated TEACHER TRIBUTE PROGRAM. Your contribution will be a welcome recognition for the teachers or staff you name, and it will help the Foundation continue its work on behalf of all District 15 students.
Tributes will run from April 4-28, 2022. For additional information please visit www.one-five.org.

Blessings in a Backpack Packing Volunteers
The food is set up in an assembly line and then you pack from there into a bag and then it is put into a bag or box labeled with the classroom teacher’s name.
The volunteers start at Jane Addams around 2:30 p.m. and drive over to Virginia Lake and usually finish by 4:15 p.m. .
Email Karen with your interest and phone number to set up a visit on a Thursday before the end of school. Karen is happy to answer all questions.

Registration for 22-23 School Year
Online student registration for the 2022-23 school year is now open. If you have not already started this process for your student(s), please visit our registration page to start this process.
Registration is the first step in getting ready for the up-coming school year. After you register your child online you need to:
Pay student fees. Our student fee webpage outlines the District’s student fee structure and the three ways fees can be paid.
If you have a student that is starting Kindergarten, entering fourth grade, or entering 7th grade, you are required to prove residency in District 15. Our residency webpage outlines the documents you will need to provide to prove residency.
All three steps of the enrollment process must be completed prior to the start of the school year. Students of families that, when required, do not prove residency, will not be able to attend class in a District 15 until the family’s residency is verified.
